Why do people need this anymore? Dont need suits for work, business casual works at all nice restaurants, get 2-3 500 suits and youre set for years. Wheres the need?

If not in a big hurry, these guys come to Metairie and Baton Rouge 3 or so times per year, it seems. I have been very pleased with suits, shirts and pants purchased through them. Great prices too. Hell, they even make bullet proof coats!

For 50+ years......"Tom James Custom Clothing" has been the "Standard" in Men's Bespoke ~ Custom Tailored Garments, Suitings, Shirts, etc. with exceptionally trained Personal Tailors, Image + Style Consultants in every metropolitan area of the US, as well as Great Britain, Austrailia and other countries.

Many of the tailors, stores mentioned in this tread began their careers and/or were professionally trained by Tom James, Inc. Tom James owns many of the finest, traditional Cloth/Fabric Mills worldwide, along with some of the major Ready Made Brands (Hickey Freeman) as well as the Custom Garment Production (Sewing) Shops. The fabrics your shown at these local tailors are likely supplied by Tom James. Your custom clothes (their orders) are often sent to a Tom James production shop to be assembled.

Tom James "Reps/Tailors & Image Consultants" make appointments, arrangements to meet with you personally @ your home, business, ofc., etc. They are highly skilled, knowledgable and are affiliated (part owners) & backed by perhaps the most respected, worldwide leader in Bespoke Men's Clothing.

They are considered the "Saville Rowe" of America. A simple internet search for "Tom James Custom Clothing" will quickly reveal, expound more on who/how/what they do.

Proper Cloth

I've only bought shirts and pants from Proper Cloth, and that made me appreciative of their service. The company realizes that people want to inspect cloth and be fitted for expensive items. So they are adding fitting rooms in NY and DC. I was very impressed with my NY experience; my profile is online if needed again. They have also put a lot of effort into improving online success via live stream and shipped try on's. Obviously, that effort adds to the cost, but quality is great.

Seems like not needing suits very much would be more of an argument for getting a (or a couple of) very nice suit.

Go to George Bass and hang out with Chase for a bit, he will get you set up. He is hilarious too, I used to be laughing the entire time I was in there

It's objectively bad advice. Off the rack suits are offered in 2" increments as far as shoulder measurements are concerned. Being you have two shoulders, that's 1" on each side. Let's say we are looking at a 40R suit. A man with a 41" measurement wouldn't fit in that suit, as it's too small. As such, a 42R is what would "fit" them. On the other side, a man with 39" shoulders would consider the 40R a "fit". Telling a man with 39" shoulders to forgot the 40R and instead buy a 42R to then have it tailored back down to 39"-ish is utterly nonsensical advice. That man should buy the 40R that fits them and then decide whether that half inch on each shoulder matters all that much to them (spoiler alert: it likely won't). Same thing with the man with 41" shoulders. Telling him to forgo the 42R and instead buy a 44R to just have it tailored back down is absurd. The only edge cases are people just above a measurement. So someone who measures a 40.5". But if anything, they are going to size "down" to a 40 instead of doing the 42" that "fits", as a quarter inch on each shoulder is likely within comfort tolerance. But telling that 40.5" to buy a 44R is, again, absurd.

If you're buying an off the rack suit to heavily tailor, start by buying a suit that best fits you in the shoulders. Any tailor worth their salt will tell you that. Anyone who tells you different is bilking you.

Not really an ETA, as I thought of this right before hitting submit, but there's one caveat to the above: if someone is really, really obese, then there potentially isn't enough fabric in the midsection on a properly sized suit, so they need to buy up to get a big enough midsection. If that applies to you, godspeed. Also, maybe consider remedying the root cause. But regardless, that doesn't apply to the overwhelming majority of the population.
