If time really matters with the exit doors over the wings (fire), why isn’t there a certificate (sort of like a tsa precheck) that shows one has gone to a class and proven he can open the door? Anyone willing to do this would be first in line for those seats. If no one fits the bill in a flight then you put a rando in the seat.

I don’t really care if I sit in that row, but when gammy with severe arthritis and COPD holds this duty and swears she is capable we are screwed.

Or maybe it doesn’t matter, kind of like the cell phone thing.

Do you really think it matters?

I've often wondered this myself. I know when I get put in an exit row, I study the instructions just in case. I wonder how many other people actually do that.

It might matter if there’s a noxious gas fire in the cabin in the ground.

I always pay for the exit row. The extra leg room is worth it. And yes, I read the instructions

Your sissy arse would probably hyperventilate before you could do anything.

Don’t get tangled on the seat belt extender on your way out.

When the plane hits the ground at 500 mph it won’t really matter

Yes, but when you’re #42 for takeoff at ATL and Earl’s galaxy note 7 has a Li-ion battery melt down you will want to exit quickly.

We were in Hawaii and an elderly Japanese couple had the seats by the wing exits. Neither spoke nor read English and they were moved and a couple moved to those seats who could read and looked more than able to open a door.

This was for an interisland flight.

Back when I worked for an airline if the flight crew saw someone sitting by an exit they don't feel cant handle opening the door they would move them with someone who could.

I've been moved to that door twice.

The airline chick said I would like the extra legroom as long as I promised I could handle the door.
