Wife's father shot himself when she was 16. He was pretty well estranged from them at that point which, I'm sure, was part of his trouble.

I hate posts like this. First, you have no idea what the OP is or isn't dealing with. NONE.
Second, the people remembering their loved ones this weekend are no different and experiencing no more pain than any other individual who has lost a loved one. They think about them every single day - whether the person died in combat or died of cancer or anything else.
I can't fathom how some of you folks have so little empathy. It's one thing to say "it's not as bad as you think. It will get better..." - but to minimize anything the OP is experiencing by trying to hang something like Memorial Day over his head is straight up sorry as shite.
