You couldn't walk from the field house to WalkOn's?

It's not that far.

I did a lot of hitchhiking when I was younger. I started when I was in high school and we would drive to St.Charles Ave.in NoLA, park the car and hitch up and down St.Charles from Carrollton to Lee Circle. Back and forth. Why? Because we were too broke and too scared to buy weed ourselves but every single time we hitched St.Charles Ave., we would get picked up by some stoner who would spark up and pass us some tasty fatties. Then, having gotten right, we would do our normal uptown bar tour.

Hitched from BR to Ft.Leonard Wood, Missouri, and back once and from New Orleans to Miami Beach once. Plus a ton in Louisiana and some up north in Wisconsin. Never had a minute's trouble on any of those trips.

Worked a summer in Yellowstone back in the mid 90s. Would pick up hitchhikers all the time. It was mostly other college aged park workers venturing around the different villages. It was so much fun

Not a hitch hiker per se but when I visited Glacier National Park there was a young woman staying at the same hotel as me who had no rental car and no money. She needed a way to get inside the park (about a 30 min drive) so I told her she could ride in with me the next morning. We were both doing different day hikes so we planned to meet back at my car at a designated time. I offered to exchange phone numbers but she didn't have her phone. I got back to the car and waited over an hour for her but she never showed up. Never saw her again. There were a few other cars in the lot when I finally gave up and left. Hope a bear or serial killer didn't get her.

Back in the seventies we did all the time and lived to tell the story don't think that happens much these days

It was a prime way of going around the country in the 60s and 70s. After my sophomore year in college, about ‘62, hitched from La. to Massachusetts with a buddy who was from a small town west of Boston. No problems. Lots of long distance rides up East Coast a few short carries too. Took 3 rides to get through NY city. On the way back down south, there was lots of publicity about rocket launches at Cape Canaveral(probly misspelled) so hitched down there very interesting, got to see some pretty rockets take off.
On the to Florida, got a ride from an old geezer whose wife was driving. He was sitting in middle of front seat, with an old pocket knife lying open in his lap. He showed it to me and explained that it was his protection if I tried anything violent. Told him it was a good strategy cause you never know if a hitchhiker had bad intentions.

My California friends tell me that they have a a program called casual car pool. It’s basically hitchhiking.

Yes…once at LSU. Gave some guy a ride from Walk-Ons area up to the North Gates near that ATV place. He started to want to go down some random roads up past the north gate and I refused. He got out without much a fuss. No idea how close to being a victim or not

I’ve resorted to asking strangers for rides on several SEC campus areas when taxis weren’t available. Before the days of uber.

I feel like this still happens in ski towns and resort islands.

Punch line: “I mean, what are the odds of having two serial killers in the same car?”

You think YOU’RE scared; I’ve gotta drive out of these woods alone.

When we were on the road, my pop would pick them up occasionally. As a kid it was kinda scary at first, but my dad liked strange and interesting people. Loved hearing their stories.

When I was 14(1964) I was in hospital to have my tonsils out.I was in a 4 pt
room with 3 other males.
One of them was a man with a big bulky bandage on his neck across his throat.
Curious me asked him what the big dressing was for.
He told me he picked up a hitchhiker who tried to cut his throat and stole his car.
Every time I was tempted to pick up a hitchhiker I thought about that.

I dont blame you, that sounds pretty damn traumatizing.

Ive got an irrational fear of knives and stabby behavior.
