Had it last week for the first time ever. Late on Tuesday night I got up to go to bed felt pain in my left foot, woke up the next day and couldn't walk. Mine was caused basically from my kidneys. Went to the er dr said it wasn't gout because it wasn't red but prescribed me a anti inflammatory. The next day it was worse. Went back to the ER that dr knew it was gout immediately said could feel fever in the foot. She gave me a steroid shot and pain pill. It was gone in a couple days. The anti inflamitory actually was making it worse. Felt like the first day at the er the dr thought I was a junkie wanting pain pills. A few years ago I broke my leg jumping in a pool and had to climb out that pain was nothing compared to this.

Had it for the first time three weeks ago. It's amazing that one relatively insignificant joint can cause such excruciating pain.

I thought we would've solved it by now.

Cortizone shot will definitely help.
The shot is too painful.
Demerol and rest.

Eat cherries, drink the cherry juice, eat more cherries

No I have not had gout Bc I'm not a malnourished old person living in medieval Europe.

Drink arse-loads of water and take Goutrin pills, available over the counter at Amazon. Alcohol abuse is the primary cause of gout. Eat cherries and stop eating everything that tastes good. Indocin and alpurinol are last course results, but require a MD RX. You need to avoid foods with purines, which is basically everything good.

I take Colcrys(sp?) When I feel a flare up coming on, usually after a weekend bender, or if I eat seafood. Works great, but gives you the flying shits!

Colcrys is the brand name for Colchizine. It's a tiny pill taken to eliminate a gout attack "after" the onset of said attack. You take two pills the first day and then one pill each day for four days. If taken within the first day or so of an attack, it's effects are fast acting and you will have complete relief in relatively short order. If you wait until you've had the attack for a few days to take the pills, the attack will subside, but the effects will remain for a few days. Your foot, toe, etc. will feel as if you are healing from a severe bruise. If you are experiencing frequent gout attacks, Alpurinol is the way to go. Like stated earlier though, you'll have to take it once a day going forward indefinitely. It prevents gout attacks, but it definitely does not relieve an attack that has already started. Eating a proper diet for gout prevention is also very important to avoiding future attacks.

I've had it two times and it fricking sucks. We went to Grand Cayman about a decade ago for a week of relaxing and diving (after not going on a vacation for years due to work). I ate nothing but fish and drank nothing but alcohol for the first two days. I woke up on day three screaming at 0300. It was bad, and I was afraid I got some posinous bite, infection, etc so went to the doc....confirmed gout. No amount of shots (medical or tequila), anti-inflammatories, pain pills, etc did anything to numb the pain. Completely ruined our vacation and I'm still pissed about it to this day. I wouldn't wish that pain on my worst enemy. Knock on wood, I've only had it one other time since and it's directly related to eating nothing but shellfish and alcohol with no other liquid or food (second time was in NOLA on an oyster, beer, crawfish, and bourbon binge).

This makes sense. I was in Dallas all week and took customers to eat at nice restaurants every night. I haven't drank that many nights in a row for a while either.

Very rich foods eaten days in a row with plenty of good drinks will be your enemy.
If you're going the diy route, try to counter act with rounds of baking soda water and apple cider vinegar. Also a Black Cherry vitamin daily.
Next time you got business entertaining, get the baked or grilled chicken dishes without drowning in buttery creamy sauces. Stick to dirty vodka martinis or scotch & water maybe.

Indomethacin
When I first started having attacks, the pain was excruciating and I could not walk for days.
A doctor prescribed indomethacin.
When I felt an attack coming on, I would take one tablet and the pain would usually go away. Sometimes I would have to take a second pill. I never had to take a third pill.
Indomethacin was a true miracle drug for me!

Colchizine

About 2 years ago I woke up wjth a crazy pain and redness in my right big toe. I could hardly walk. Dr did a blood test and said my levels weren't high enough for it to be gout be he had given me some kinda prescription for gout that I took for a few days that made the pain go away.

Colchicine will knock it out of you. As others have mentioned it may tear up your stomach.
I get an attack of it once or twice of year, usually when the seasons change. My grandfather had it as well and so does one of my cousins.
My Dr who is a foot and ankle specialist says because of the family history, I just inherited the lovely condition. I don't drink, I keep my diet fairly balanced. He said it doesn't matter in my case.
I did learn a while ago that Potassium helps neutralize uric acid. I try to eat Bananas regularly and it helps keeps the attacks from being so severe in my experience.
When I do get an attack I'll take colchicine for two or three days and eat about three bananas a day during the attack. It is usually over by the 3rd day if I caught it late. If I feel the attack coming on early I can usually stop it within 24 hours.

I have pseudogout. I've had so many surgeries on my knee due to high school sports that sometimes my knee swells up for no apparent reason.

Alipurinol now for 8 years. Before I started that when I would have an attack GNC GRAPE SEED EXTRACT capsules worked miracles for ending an attack.

I have high Uric acid but not high enough to have the gout. I am in allopurinol but only for 3 days and I feel worse. I have body aches from head to toe nit sure if it's working

Started having flare ups myself about a year ago. A friend has had it since he was in his twenties. Spoke with rheumatologist and he advised that you can achieve perfection with exercise, stop drinking alcohol completely, and give up red meat and shellfish, but will still get flare ups. He advised starting the meds, but have to take every day for rest of life to be effective.
I heard about the cherry remedy. Started drinking juice from extract during flare ups, and it helped. Now I take cherry extract in capsule form twice a day, and flareups mostly eliminated. Acts as a preventative for me.
Has to be black cherry or tart cherry. Here is some info on why cherry works...
