Both the ole lady and your buddy are about to learn a very hard lesson. As to your buddy, I doubt the boat was in the wife's name only. As far as the wife's lesson goes, even if it was titled in her name only doesn't mean it isn't community property.

My friend from childhood had to file bankruptcy, because the bank was pretty much taking all his crap back because he kept buying indulgent stuff rather than pay his bills . Edit: Not really the same thing, but the fact that he was probably having problems with his wife over bills, leads me to believe she would probably have ended up selling his stuff anyway

won't come back on him, it should come back on the party that sold it grossly under market value(if that was the case,) in that that party would have to forfeit an additional part of their community property to make it right, but since it was the wife, I doubt that will happen
