Some people would rather look like the biggest dumbasses than admit they are wrong.
It's like people and their beliefs, once some people get certain beliefs, it's as if they would rather ignore anything that will challenge those beliefs than to want to actually expand their views/beliefs.
But does your sister-in-law know about google? She could simply google something like whether or not there are tuna in the gulf. Is she from S. Louisiana? If so, how the frick she not know there isn't tuna in the gulf?
