Liberals are always pushing "jobs programs". You know what a good jobs program is? Prison construction.

frick that, we need to go back to hanging people and doing it pretty often. Use hemp rope to make the greenies happy.

yep, there are 3 things the state can't get wrong, spend money on the military, killing people when they are suspected but not convicted of a crime and execute the right person for a crime....they never get any of these things wrong. With the exception of 17 capital convictions overturned in the last 9 years that is...the system got those 17 cases wrong...but outside of that they never get it wrong....and even if they do, is it all that bad???? Better to mistakenly kill an innocent person from time to time than it is to make certain criminals pay the ultimate penalty.....cause the state can not get a conviction wrong, ever, not once in the history of the nation.

Furthermore, not only was violent crime worse in the 80s and 90s than now, but also in the 70s. So we always hear older people say “things are so out of control now” “things like this didnt used to happen”, but during Brady Bunch days, violent crime was higher than now. It’s all spin, negative news sells.

The murder rate was actually a tiny bit higher in 1960 than in 2018, very close though. 5.1 per 100 thousand population in 1960 and 5.0 in 2018. In 1980 it peaked at 10.2.

There is an entire subculture of women who write these killers with the hope of starting a relationship. I saw it when I was an associate attorney assisting my then-boss in a death penalty appeal. My guess is he's probably going to move in with one of these women.

Overall violent crime isnt down that much and rape is way up. But that is due to domestic abuse and rape being reported now so much more than before. But things like Burglary and Murder are down by about half compared to 40 years ago.

I think that was his point. Seems like we did something in the 90's that worked.

So we weren’t locking up people for murder and violent crimes with even longer sentences back in the 70s and 80s when it was skyrocketing (we were)

Also he can clarify if he wants, but I seriously doubt that was his point, from the tone of his post it’s much more likely he was saying “things are so out of control now as compared to then” which is simply not true. But I’ll be happy to have him clarify and apologize if I’m wrong

I'm saying that we started throwing "non-violent" drug offenders behind bars and magically violent crime dropped.

Might be a bad idea to ignore the facts and just hope that the violent crime rates aren't about to return to pre 90's numbers.

There are many reasons why it dropped, locking people up for non violent drug offenses is not one of them IMO. More to do with Roe v Wade and an aging population. Also gang violence and gangs overall were way more prevalent in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Also maybe people are just less savage now than they used to be, it would make sense as we have gradually become more civilized over time.

It’s funny that almost exactly 20 years after abortion is made legal, homicide rates drop like a rock.
