Yeah but why, could have easily been the week before or after and keep the 4th weekend central to Independence day celebrations in the city, etc.

Nothing wrong with having it on the 4th weekend. Most people have a 3 day weekend because of the holiday.

In the early 2000s i worked at the lord & Taylor in the New Orleans center - essence and bayou classic are two reasons I’d never work retail again

I have a buddy who was once an area sales manager at Dillards. He used to tell me the horror stories of Essence weekend. The shoplifting was usually at a record high for the year, and spread as far as the Baton Rouge stores. Also, women would come in, buy a dress or outfit on Thursday, leave the tags on, and return them on Tuesday, very obviously worn. It happened enough every year that it was noteworthy.

That’s how they always knew.

I mean New Orleans in July…tags still on. You could do the math.

And I don’t know how it is now, but this was at a time when Dillards had a policy of refunding any return that had a receipt…and these “customers” took full advantage of that. They may as well have shoplifted the clothes, because they were a total loss to the store once they came back.

I watched last year's. Every act was rushed and usually played medleys. A good number of them seemed flat.

I knew the tide had shifted when the lineup included the Black Eyed Peas. Nothing against the group, but the core crowd, Black women, wanted Frankie, not Fergie. I mean, she’s cool, but there was a collective eyeroll in Section 122 when she took the stage.

Maybe now we can start scheduling some real 4th events in New Orleans and the hotels won’t have to close to prevent people bbqing in the bathtubs.

Or we will probably just subsidize this failure with our tax dollars per usual. Fml

When my besties and I made our plans to attend, it didn't matter who the headliner was or what acts would be performing or how much money we had in the bank.

If we had to, we’d take out payday loans to bankroll the July trip to New Orleans. We’d start planning our outfits, sending photos in our group chats about color themes, hats and breathable fabrics to beat the Louisiana heat.

Bahahaha. Not sure if you’re serious. Because black people will never have black fatigue.

The overwhelming majority of them (90-95%) will be screaming dindunuffin and begging for reparations for the next ten thousand years, or however long humankind is around, no matter what happens.

Essence is a million times better than a bunch of racist rednecks in the city in July.

A black man at a country music festival would be FAR safer than a white dude at Essence.

Gee I don’t know why any self respecting business would close for the holiday. GBA.
