Being filmed through a peep hole in a hotel has never been part of being a celebrity.

It is a ridiculous amount of damages.

A worker who loses both arms in an industrial accident would get about a million, if that, in workers compensation.

Agreed, but that's the country we live in. Notice how I don't even know these folks and they're literally pissed at me for my opinion.

Having some weirdo set up a camera on the peep hole on your hotel room to film you nudes is part of being a celebrity? Uh okay.

You do realize that the amount is so high because its a "message sent" award.

She'll never get anywhere close to that. It will probably settle in the 10-20 mill range AT MOST.

Let me spell it out for you.

In exchange for making TONS AND TONS of money, you pay for it by being followed by paparazzi, stalkers, people that obsess over you and a LOT of other horrible stuff. This is part of being a celebrity, whether they LIKE it or not.

Now, I may be more down with a certain amount if it was something where her whole career came crashing down because she was "pretty" with clothes on, but hideous with her clothes off... so if it had proven to hurt her stock you could look at a reasonable metric to say that her career would have been WORTH that much over X years. That is something I could dig.

Her boobies and snatch was shown to everyone and that equals 55mil? GTFO

I wouldn't have given her that much. I might have given her $10 million.

But I'm not completely unsympathetic to the verdict. The difference here is that that video has been seen millions of times, and as long as she is in the public eye, she will live with that video and the barbs that come with it for the rest of her life. If she had been an anonymous, homely person, it would have been a different matter, but she's a beautiful woman and a major celebrity. Tape her naked and post it on the web, and it's like tossing a lit match into a gas tank.

Andrews was not physically raped, but the psychological damage has probably far eclipsed what an actual rape would have done. Given that, yes, she's entitled to compensation in the millions. And the reality is that once this settlement is appealed, her take will probably come out to about $10 million anyway, maybe a little more.

Are you saying having a guy drill out the keyhole on your door and film you getting undressed is a part of her job? That she somehow had this coming because she ia on TV for a living?

I'll tell this thread why $55,000,000 is ridiculous.

It is ridiculous because everyone on Earth would consent to allow themselves to be filmed walking around naked in a hotel room in exchange for a check for $55,000,000.

I would walk around naked and shove the lamp into my hindquarters for much less than that.

She was a reporter for ESPN at the time. I doubt she was making tons of money and I wouldn't call her a celebrity. She's an attractive sideline reporter.

So you really are saying this is a hazard of the job and she shouldn't be compensated at all?

She's not getting a check for 55 million.

No one involved with this, even the jury members, thinks that's going to happen.

These "Message" verdicts happen in big cases often.
