Why would he make an account private that noone knew was him? (other than people that knew he was alive)

Except wouldn't make a new fortnite account, or even make the one he used private. The account I assume is linked to an email account or some other trail back to him.
That scenario is more likely then someone hacking his account.
More likely than fortnite purging his account then someone else signing up with the same name.
More likely than him paying for someone else's account with his credit card and the account just being linked to him via that one transaction.
