Has anyone here gone to the school or know any friends that went to Episcopal in Baton Rouge? I'm worried what the vibe was around the school. Was there a bunch of sex, drugs, and rock and roll going on throughout the students? We have kids at Trinity Day School and are wondering if we should apply for the lab school or find a way to send them to Episcopal. Any info would help. Thanks in advance!

Have some friends who went there... it's a good school... but it's high school, great education... there will be some drinking, pot smoking and adderall usage on the fringes, just like most private schools, but nothing overly absurd

Also had friends that went to UHigh, good education also... same situation there

My take is that it's more about how you raise your kids and how you teach them to deal with those scenarios

FWIW: my friends graduated '04-'05

Kids would pin me down simultaneously giving me the nuggie and blowing on my belly while I laughed histerically until I tapped out. Shoot did I say kids, I meant the two PE coaches.

I went, and graduated in 2007. It's a great school if you take advantage of it. If your kid doesn't care, then the school won't help him/her find motivation.

Great academics. Period.

And you couldn't even do that right.. It didn't matter, that rock I gave you was just a piece of sheet rock anyway.

Great school with superb academics. You get out what you put in. Several kids my age went to Cornell, Princeton, etc, while others flaked out in college.

U-high will have quite the waiting list compared to Episcopal i imagine.

Thanks for the info! So are most of your friends doing well in life? Solid job, BA/Masters degrees, intelligent people??? UHigh is a lot cheaper but we really want to keep the Christian aspect in our kids' schooling. Were most kids there spiritual or were many just going through the motions?

One of my closest friends has 3 girls, all 3 go to the lab school. His oldest daughter got in the first try, has been there since kindergarten and now in 5th grade. The other 2, who are twins, didn't get in on the first try, they went somewhere else for kindergarten, then was held back to apply again for kindergarten and got in.

I had a few friends in HS who went to Episcopal since kindergarten then at some point they ended up going to the same school as me, which was a public school. One guy was valedictorian. There is one guy who actually ended up quitting school. He used a lot of drugs and alcohol then decided about a year after he would have graduated to go get his GED, went to BRCC, got the credits he needed to transfer to LSU, got accepted into law school and is now a lawyer. In his office, he has his GED certificate on the wall.

It will provide an extremely high quality education, but I want to say it cost more to go there than it does to send your kids to LSU so it would be worth trying to get them into the lab school, which provides a good education as well. I don't know for sure, but I am sure "drugs, sex and rock & roll" is a concern of any parents who has kids in HS, wherever they go, but I know some places are worse than others, but I don't know what schools it goes on more at than others, etc.

Why not Baton Rouge High?
Higher ACT average, more National Merit Scholars, more AP courses than Episcopal, Lab school, Catholic, or SJA and no tuition bill.

Yes, most have solid jobs and are good people. A few people have had struggles of course, but the majority are great and doing well. We have a ton of people in residency. Out of 96 graduating, probably 10 or so are MDs.

Regarding religion, we had 30 minute chapel 3 times a week, and Eucharist about once every five weeks. The head chaplains are always great. Participation was encouraged, but not enforced other than attendance.

My parents had the same issues you have.
St. Aloysius has Wednesday religion class that public school kids went to in order to be confirmed.

I went to this with kids from U-High, Baton Rouge Magnet and Episcopal.

The more money these kids have, the better the drugs.

If you can afford it, Episcopal is the way to go, if your kids can handle it.

Good school overpriced

IF money is not an object then send them there

Other options:
Dunham- raising tuition to almost Episcopal level

Runnels- good, small

Lab, Catholic, St Joseph, Parkview all about the same - Lab and Parkview the lower option-

Public- BR magnet or LMSA- if you want to send your kids to a boarding school

Especially if they are looking for the Christian aspect to supplement the high academics.
