Do the legals and will alterations FIRST.

A long time friend had wanted me to be his executor, except he no longer lived in Tennessee, he was two states to the west and faced a lingering, mind-losing death. He found an alternative care giver, but never altered his will. He was so busy taking lists and trying to do everything perfect that he entered the dementia phase and talked to people who weren't there and his lawyer said (to his care giver) it's too late.

I remember him saying a couple of weeks after his diagnosis, "I want to leave you something, but you have everything." I said thank you, you're right. Now get the rest of it done. He was always the most considerate house guest we ever had.

How does one "get their affairs" in order?

All of my family is gone, none left. Would be very easy for me. Sell everything I own, cash in my IRA and savings. Then do everything I have always wanted to but haven't.

Here is a thread I started in money talk a while back. Good info in there from lots of folks.

The very first recommendation in there, a TOD account, is not a valid way of passing property in Louisiana.

I have a Legacy Binder that has every piece of information about our lives. Birth Certificate, will, POA, investments, funeral instructions, life Ins, burial instructions, minor debt, who to contact and what to do in the event my wife and I die at the same time or separately. Updated quarterly.
It is kept in gun safe.
Each child knows where an envelope is hidden with instruction on how to access safe and and instructions.
They have seen the binder tabs and received a short explanation but have not seen the details of investments, etc.
We die separately we know what to do and have all info in one place.

Estate planning. A nice gentleman in my Sunday School class does this. I would arrange with my brother to take the pets and tie up loose ends at work.
