I've had one like this that was made by Orbitrek for years. 88 bucks with a years warranty.

Find a good scary movie and 10 miles will go by nothing.

Pick one. You can't have both. Health club quality will cost you a couple grand. Cheaper ones just suck.

You really do get what you pay for with ellipticals.

Just for the record, ellipticals are much inferior to other cardio machines and other forms of cardio in general. A stationary bike would be a much better investment.

Mayo Clinic disagrees with this statement.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/fitness/expert-answers/elliptical-machines/faq-20058294

And anyone with knee or ankle problems will benefit from an elyptical machine. A stationary bike does not provide an upper body workout like an elyptical with moving handles

WebMD disagrees with this statement:
"The stationary bike is a less intense calorie-burner than some of the other machines. You'll need to pedal four miles to burn 100 calories, says Alexander."

But when you are discussing what machines are most effective at A) stimulating a greater number of muscle fibers in a more impactful way (and when it comes to overall leg development the stationary bike plays second fiddle to no one) and B) metabolic efficiency (i.e. what allows you to work the hardest in the least amount of time) your whole "heart rate is heart rate" remark becomes flawed.

You can go as fast as you want on an eliptical, but the plane of direction the machine operates at and the muscles which are stressed the most will not change based on effort.

An elliptical will bust your arse if you're not in shape. Great cardio workout.

Just stop. We are talking specifically about cardio. If you want to start talking about strength training do it somewhere else.

You know the ramps are adjustable? A fixed crank is not. You want to built muscle? Do some squats. Don't ride a stationary bike.

This, and the real problem is, that you can get many years of gym use of $5k ellipticals for what you are going to spend on a decent one for yourself.

Neither one of them are high-impact forms of cardio. Based on the resistance, you can tailor the machine to fit your needs or limitations.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret, the upper body workout obtained via an elliptical is mostly non-existent. Your lower body is still doing the bulk of the work.

Mayo Clinic disagrees with this statement.

Well it's a good thing the Mayo Clinic is not the end-all-be-all when it comes to evaluating workout equipment because...

10 Best And Worst Cardio Machines

The spin bike has a little less oomph than the Airdyne, but it can be a really great choice for cardio. Do a long-distance session, some high-intensity intervals, or go to a spin class. New riders beware—sitting on the less-than-comfortable saddle for an extended period of time can lead to some awkward bruising the next morning.

We're putting the elliptical below the Arc trainer, because the Arc trainer offers more versatility. However, we have the same problems with the elliptical; it's just unnatural and ineffective. Further, setting the resistance at a level any lower than a 10 is about as effective at burning calories as sitting on the couch.

The elliptical's only plus side is that it's a low-impact option. However, we think the bike or swimming are much more effective options if you're limited by an injury.

The 4 Dumbest Forms of Cardio
by Dr John Rusin 11/17/14

quote:

Fourth Dumbest: The Elliptical

Primary Problem: It's Monotonous and Unchallenging
Finally, workout addicts from all walks of life, from cardio queens to beach bros, could justify their three-hour workouts consisting of monotonous, mind-numbing exercise because a few university studies concluded the elliptical to be "more joint friendly" than its vilified counterpart, the treadmill.

Like many novelties, we as a fitness society are capable of transforming a once noble idea of reducing joint stress into pathological insanity. In today's dysfunctional fitness culture, the idea of hopping on the elliptical a few hours a week while catching up on reality TV has become the single-minded symbol of what fitness actually is.

Why do people continue to flock to the elliptical at alarming rates? The answer is simple: The elliptical is inherently easy and unchallenging, both physically and mentally, for the person who's content to only pretend to exercise.

When used as a singular method of fitness, the elliptical provides self-justification for people who are not mentally or emotionally capable of training with passion, purpose, or focus.

Hitting autopilot and hanging on for the ride does not deliver life-changing health and fitness results. It's just not that simple.

...say otherwise.

Also, I am speaking from firsthand experience.

If you have a hip injury then squats are out of the question.

Also, behold the legs of a cyclist:

Don't get an elliptical...get this.

We had an old elliptical that was finally showing it's age. I'd get bored on it and barely winded after being on it over an hour. Upgraded to this thing a month and a half ago. Comes with a heart monitor and it registrars your heart rate, etc...

Feels like doing sprints dragging a refrigerator. After 15 minutes you'll be done. Working up to 2 sets of 15... Burns a ton of calories.

This depends on the type of elliptical. Some you can adjust the resistance in the arms.
