Whenever these threads pop up I always try to explain to people that private school teachers are paid much less than public school teachers because private school teachers are not state or federally mandated to possess a teaching certificate or to keep up with continued learning...it's like some people are insulted that they pay all this money for private school and those teachers are less compensated than trashy public school teachers

Most people with a brain know public school teachers make more money than private just like they know that even those the government does not require teachers at private schools to be certified the dioceses does

Private schools teachers have the luxury of not having to put up with bs from the state

My dad taught for nearly 30 years. There aren't many teachers making that 60k number if any. Now he got a sweet retirement deal in his early 50s and makes pretty good money collecting that and having another job now.

Also knew of a few who went into teaching right when we graduated ~7-8 years ago and they started at 42k IIRC. They would not do private school in the BR area because the pay wasn't high enough.

This is why I absolutely REFUSE to become a teacher.

Yes the pay is awful, but there are a few perks.

1) The recession and oil bust didn't affect me 1 bit.
2) At 56 years old, I can retire with 80% of my pay given to me for life.
3) I get my insurance coverage for life and my wife's whole life. (Same with pay)
4) I have a master's and am moving up the pay scale. These are percentage raises. Again, not incredible, but steady. Supervisors can make closer to 70k in smaller parishes and 100k in places like NOLA.

Again, not glamourus but steady

Salary.com

My fiancé has taught at both. Almost a $15k cut at private. She is teaching in a public school because they will pay for a masters if she promises to work three years (already has one).

We have programs like this also. For masters and Ph.D.

We choose to make less money so we can be happy at work. Happy teachers means awesome kids. Parents know that.

EBR start at about 37k or 38k. You can check the EBR web site. Look for compensation schedule.

Private will be closer to 25k. Maybe lower, depending on the school.

In Tennessee, Private School teachers get paid much more than public. There has been a mass exodus of good public school teachers who have crossed over to private for that reason. While this isn't the case in most of the country, it is in Tennessee because public school salaries are so low.

My wife started at $25k in a private school.
In my brother's first year in a public school he was making more than my mom in her 15th year in a private school.

Well archdiocese sets the budgets due to most private schools being catholic.

Not true, in a pinch they will hire a non-certified teacher...self imposing rules is not the same as government mandated rules

I would say from hearing stories the kids can be bad at both.

Now having to deal with in city schools parents is the worst of it all. My sister taught in BR and now in laffy and has had some crazy parents.

They might in a pinch but they give you a deadline of one year to get certified.

They will read every lesson plan and sit in the classroom a few times a week until then.

They are always in a pinch so they hire lots of uncertified people. Also, there are a certain number of credits per year you have to accumulate and you will be covered under a practitioners liscence.

It's not that bad. Hey meet with you and observe a couple hours per week. Once they know you are ok, they stop coming around.
