EcoBoost Engine Oil

Since there appear to be plenty of EcoBoost drivers on the OT...I ran across this today.
Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory helped develop a new oil formulation for direct injection engines.
LINK
Sure, it's a thinly veiled ad in the magazine. However, it does provide some insight into things that can impact the DI engine performance...and the research behind it is real.

quote:
“It is hypothesized that Calcium and Sodium detergents chemically react with the fuel to create a third chemical that is neither fuel nor motor oil. This third chemical has a lower octane value than either the fuel or the motor oil, so the detonation resistance is lower,”...“Because of the lower detonation resistance of this ‘blended’ molecule, abnormal combustion results, which we call Low Speed Pre-Ignition. This was proven-out by blending oil formulas that eliminated Sodium detergents and greatly reduced Calcium detergents."

you need to head over to bobistheoilguy.com
Nobody here is going to be able to adequately discuss oil composition and applications.
DIs are a whole different animal and fuel choice can impact oil performance as much or more than actual oil used.

I'm familiar with the site...I just know guys who work at the National Transportation Research Center (NTRC) who were involved in some of this work, and I thought it was interesting. Since several OT posters have mentioned they have the EcoBoost engine on their Fords, I thought I would share it.

I suffer from low-speed pre-ignition sometimes

As a previous Ecoboost owner, God bless you all who are still driving one

Yeah these type of threads are the only reason I didn’t buy one.
