Finally got paid from girl’s insurance in July
Why wouldn't you just go through your insurance then have your insurance go after the girl?

I went to an express DMV yesterday at about 930. I needed to renew my real ID drivers license and my vehicle registration.
There were 17 people ahead of me when I sat down, according to the giant video screen.
I was out of there with a new license and a new registration, in hand, within an hour and a half.
It was the easiest and most beautiful experience I’ve ever had at the DMV.
Just wanted to let you know.

First tried in February and took me three months to schedule an appointment. That was the soonest availability.
While I certainly can't speak for the availability when you were looking, I do know that if you look now you can have an appt within one week. So this has the feel of BS.
Second, my daughter was getting her instructional permit and it took very little time to find an appt.

yep, OP is lazy, ignorant of basic rules that most everyone else seems to be aware of but is probably wanting everyone to pile on in his support because of everyone's general disdain for the DMV

Don’t give a shite about unjust laws? Yeah.
Looking for sympathy? No, more like a solution.

The issue, my son doesn't have a social security number. The manager said "that's impossible, he has to have one. He can't do anything without it."
For the record, there is no law requiring you to sign up for social security. It's a shockingly bad investment. Yes, my son has a passport and has been to public school and everything without a social security number. You simply aren't required to have it despite what everyone believes.
Legit question because I never knew that. How does not having an SSN work when it comes time for him to work (legally, not cash under the table), file tax returns, open a bank account, apply for loans, etc?

Is it possible to opt out if it's not required?

As long as you have a TIN (Tax ID number) you should be good to go. That is a different number than a Social Security number. The possibility exists he will take over my side business by the time he gets out of college. At that point, he doesn't make a "wage" so he won't have to pay SS taxes. I'm going off of memory and haven't looked at this stuff in a while.
I can tell you this, the DMV is going to lose this one. I'm going to make them change their policy. There is no way in hell the Louisiana DMV can make you sign up for a voluntary federal program to get a Louisiana license. It's an absolute violation of your rights and privileges as a Louisiana citizen.

He has opted out. Everyone will tell you that's impossible but it's not. Also, once you have a number, that's it... you can never opt out. That number is for life.

Plus, how are you claiming your child as a dependent for the last 15 years without a SSN?

How am I making his life more difficult? He's been to public school, he has a passport and has traveled internationally. I've heard the "more difficult" thing for years and it's not materialized yet. I was told he couldn't get a passport either. Those folks were wrong too.
Also, I'm not claiming him on my taxes. I'm not going to sign my adolescent child up to forfeit 6.25% of his income FOR LIFE to get a few bucks back on taxes. I'm a man of principle no matter the cost.

Nice job screwing over not only yourself but your son, I gotta admire that level of insanity

He's been to public school,
quote:Wait, you think that him not having a SSN means he doesn’t have to pay FICA? You need to go back and read up on that. Non-citizens/non-residents can be exempt from FICA in certain situations, but your son is a citizen.

Exact same thing happened to me in college, mail went to my parents house. My mom has a Neurological disease and was functioning at the time but having some minor mental lapses. Just put it in my pile of mail to get when I visited. (Didn’t look at sender)
Couple months later got stopped in one of BRPDs infamous Inspection Sticker checks. (Their motto should be Protecting and serving inspection sticker tickets) Got hit with another slew of tickets.
In retrospect thankfully the cop showed a moderate amount of courtesy and didn’t impound the truck.
Either way, dad was irate when he had to float me a loan for a couple hundred dollars to pay all my fines and fees.
Saying “how am I just supposed to know I have to send in the plate at 19, why didn’t you tell me” was not the move. It turned a loan with no interest into one with interest and cost me another $150.

The fine is $700 because of the length of time the DMV considers him as having a lapse in insurance. Longer the lapse, higher the fine.
Does the state fine and track down people who buy one month of insurance then not pay the next 5 months but keep the ID card?
