In my last job I traveled a good amount and often alone. At first I would sit in my room and get room service.

Took me a while to get the courage but I learned how glorious it can be to walk around a new city alone, find a craft brewery, get a flight, then head to a popular local restaurant and enjoy a nice meal at the bar. Sometimes talk to others, sometimes not.

I don’t miss business travel all that much now that I only do it once a month or so, but I miss those evenings.

I traveled for work for a few years when I worked for LSU and at first it was great but it wore me down after a while. No way I could do that now that I have kids.

In November 2019, the wife and her sister planned a NYC trip to see a bunch of Broadway shows. I tagged along but made it into my own personal food and drink trip. Searched some old F&DB threads, then mapped out 3 days of walking around the city hopping from restaurant to bar to restaurant. It was an amazing way to see the city, sit in solitude, find great food, and chat random people in bars.

I may have gotten a bit lonely by the end though. I remember being pretty uncharacteristically chatty with with wife when we met back up for dinner on the last night

I travel a great deal and often eat dinner alone. My wife always says she feels sorry I have to do it. I don't. I think it is great. I pick my restaurant and time. I sit where I want and sometimes hear the strangest conversations ever. I imagine drinking alone is also good.

A really nice, dimly lit hotel bar in a random city on a work trip is downright medicinal.

I was an only child. While I enjoy being with people, deep down I prefer to be alone. And drinking at a bar alone is like a form of meditation.

Business travel puts me in my element.

Im not an only child and have my own kids. On top of that I have to be VERY social with work with client dinners, etc.

Sitting down alone at a bar is meditation for me too and I end up enjoying a neat scotch/bourbon or martini a lot more as well.

Enjoyed a drink or 4 with Mike Leach at the bar at Fuad’s in Houston. One of the most fun conversations ever.

Evenings at a nice hotel bar/restaurant drinking alone is pretty fantastic. I prefer them to a dive bar but they have their charm as well. I've met plenty of interesting out of towners and been included in everything from celebrating business deals or bitching sessions about failed meetings or stories of recently deceased relatives. It's a mixed bag of travelers and interactions. Almost always starts with individuals or groups asking if I'm local and asking for recommendations on things to do and places to go.
