LOL. I think people misinterpreted my old posts. My whole point was why bother going to a more difficult school, whereas going to a easier school would have been better.

Not sure you understand the point of her speaking at Southern, she stands for the opposite of your point. She is an example of excellence in everything that you do, and that by being a great person and a high achiever, you won't meet any boundary you can't break. She wasn't limited by being African American or a woman because she was actually qualified to do all of these great things, instead of being unqualified and complaining about minority barriers, then being placed in anyway through affirmative action.

Upperdecker.
In all honesty, I do understand that in order to succeed to the best of your ability, overcoming obstacles is necessary. I know that achievement is something you should work for.
However, I will admit that my vision is tainted now because of experiences I have had in my undergraduate studies.
Personally, it really upsets me to see engineering degrees so easily awarded at a school like Southern when I know people who were just as/more intelligent at schools like LSU and Tech who were not able to complete the curriculum.
I know that engineering is supposed to challenging. But the very fact that the standard of work is so uneven across schools does bother me to a certain extent. I feel like if I went to SUBR as an undergrad I would already have the job I want.
I am not trying to complain about my life. All I am saying is that while I agree with your sentiments, some people feel that same way that I do. Why work harder when you get the same or better results working/studying,etc. elsewhere.
I do not think that is the way it should be, but I do understand that this is part of life.

But I'll celebrate the first black woman to be an astronaut
She was actually shunned by her fellow astronauts. The Outpost used to be an astronaut hangout near Johnson Space Cemter in Houston that burned down several years ago. All kinds of crew memorabilia. She was airbrushed out of her crew photo that was displayed there.
