re: Downtown BR Traffic - Nicholson - now a two-way street

I go north on Nicholson and right at Government every morning. Hardly anyone is ever driving eastbound on Gov't (coming from the River) in the AM so it was very easy to take a right on red. ALOT of vehicles make that right turn in the mornings.. and now will be stuck in line with everyone trying to go straight. It was an unpleasant surprise this morning, but I will give it a few weeks to see how it works. The traffic signal cycles may need to be adjusted if they haven't been already.
On the other hand, in the evenings, I take a left from Gov't onto that street running in front of 13th gate to get home. So I guess I'll be taking that immediate left on Nicholson now..
Does anyone know if it will go back to what it was after they finish the repairs on the street in front of 13th gate?

It should. There are businesses there and that is the future location of that water campus thing.

Its St. Louis that is now a to-way

I know. It's easier for everyone to visualize Nicholson going north into downtown.

What a terrific sample size.

Just reporting what I saw. They went from two lanes of traffic on a main artery into downtown down to one lane. That will not help traffic going into downtown from Nicholson.
If you can help me understand how it will improve traffic, I would appreciate it.

It doesn't really mean much that there was traffic and confusion on the first day it was open.

You've already made up your mind. Clearly you're a traffic engineer on top of being a lawyer. That's pretty impressive.

Come on now children, it isn't permanent, nor was it done for traffic purposes.

I am open. I just don't understand how it will help going from 2 lanes to 1 lane on a main artery into downtown.
Can you help?
ETA: I'm over the anger. Just curious now.

I'd go with this:

They're doing construction in the area on underground utilities. The lane reduction is temporary so they can make the repairs without completely closing the street.
The real issue is that they are doing this at the same time that river road is closed there for construction. It creates an awful choke point.

Didn't know it was temporary. Looked pretty damn permanent this morning with the double center line and paint on the road.

You'd have to remind me what street that is.
Both streets will likely revert to normal use inside of six months.
Not a guarantee and I don't work for the city or DOTD. But the on the ground construction guys are typically pretty good at knowing what's up.
Edit: they hung new signal lights too. It's gonna be a long bit of work. That's why cops had it roped off about two weeks ago at night with the power off.
Ah, never take highland in.

St. Ferdinand is the street just to the east. St. Ferdinand turns into Highland.

Traffic Engineering said the Nicholson/St Louis St change will be permanent and is unrelated to the SSO work being done on River Rd. They are waiting until Highland/St Ferdinand is converted before deciding if the plan should be ditched.

It's been terrible every morning and sporadically during the day. That street is no longer a viable option to get into downtown. Have to loop around.

How far is down is Nicholson Dr backing up in the morning? I'm moving next week where I will have to commute down River Rd and Nicholson Dr. I'm looking at Washington St and Thomas H Delpit Dr to avoid the traffic jam.

Heading into downtown... about 50 yards south of the overpass.
