As a person who has had stem cells collected and bone marrow biopsies, neither are a big deal.
Stem cell collection is like getting an IV. Needle might be a bit bigger, but no pain/issue besides that. It does take a while (a few hours), but you relax in a big comfy chair and watch a movie. If they make you do injections prior to the extraction, then your joints may ache due to the promoted production of stem cells. It’s not bad. It’s like having some flu aches for a minute.
As for the bone marrow procedures, definitely ask to go under. It’s not the worse pain in the world, but it sure doesn’t tickle. No need to be tough.
All of these procedures, if done by folks who know what they’re doing (MD Anderson for ex), then you will be no worse for wear after.
Thanks for doing what you’re doing. You’re definitely helping to save a life.

My sister did it for me.
Feels like a muscle pull.

Thank you so much for all those details. I think the first step is to do some preliminary testing to be sure I’m in good enough health to donate. If that goes well I’ll hopefully be able to donate in the next few months. Seems like an easy enough process.

Maybe a dumb question but do you get paid for the donation? Aside from them covering your transportation and all.
No
I wouldn’t have taken it if they did

I don't think it's a dumb question at all.
It doesn't make the donation of bone marrow process any less heroic or virtuous a gesture.
As a further aside...
Are the docs working pro bono? The nurses? Is the Hospital donating it's facility?

My dad has had multiple myeloma too and had a bone marrow transplant and he’s survived 5 and a half years but he’s deteriorating. Still an amazing treatment.

Patients medical insurance & National Bone Marrow Donation which operates under Be The Match Foundation

My sister was able to be my match but a lot of people need unrelated donors
What makes someone a match?
Seems odd that some people are better off with a donor who's their 10th or 20th cousin. You'd think that person would be less similar to the patient.

Sorry to respond late. The more of a match you are, the less likely you will have severe rejection, in this case called graft versus host disease, which is the leading cause of post transplant mortality. Doesn't guarantee it won't happen, but the less of a match you have, sometimes it's the only option, the higher the chances of having worse GVHD.

Awesome! Be the Match will send you a kit and you swab the inside of your mouth and send it back. A really simple process!

I donated in 1989 when the procedure was in its infancy. It is a much simpler process now. My recipient is now the longest living non-related marrow recipient in the world. She is 70 years old and going strong.

Now 15 years later I got the call that I’ve been matched with a patient. Has anyone gone through this process?
DO IT! Don't ask questions or think about it for a second. DO IT!
I registered a couple of years ago during a donor drive that hoped to find a match for a neighbor's granddaughter. I wasn't a match. They didn't find a match for her before she died. I've never been called to donate.
