Earlier in the month my 75 pound Dalmatian ruptured his CCL (the dog equivalent ACL) and surgery has been recommended by my vet. They mentioned bringing in a specialist that they use, and quoted me 3500-4500 (which I feel is a little high). He is only 6 and has a lot of life left and loves running and playing, so the surgery is definitely something that I want to get done for him, but don't want it to cost the price of a used Honda Civic.

Has anyone else had this surgery for their dog? Where did you get it done and what was the price? Any other words of advice?

I live in New Orleans but would be willing to travel if someone has a good option.

Thanks in advance

You say that, but will a used Honda Civic lick peanut butter off your balls when you get home from work?

It depends how much money you have. It would be completely irresponsible for many people to spend that kind of money on a dog. But if you can afford it, and it is worth it to you, than go for it.

My job is consuming my brain.

I read the job title wondering why a dog and a casing collar locator would need to be surgically combined.

Just spend a few bucks on a bullet. That should solve his knee issue.

Someone else mentioned this as an option. Guessing it is cheaper because they let students do some of the work? Any clue on pricing?

100.00 for a consult
Parents have a dog that surgery failed twice on, was told 5-6k if LSU did it
I talked them into just seeing what LSU said
Told us they could do it & 99.9% it wouldn’t fail, 2600
Dog hasn’t had another issue since

Worth the drive & 100 IMO to see what they say

Had my Scottie done last Nov at Carrollton Vet $1800. Probably more for a large dog.

My love has a price.

Even after the surgery your dog is on limited time and won't really enjoy itself.

I can’t give you the exact specifics on pricing but it is a lot cheaper and I will only take my pets there from now on. We have a spaniel and she had a really bag stomach bug. We took her to our old vet and after an afternoon of tests she told us she has pancreatitis and she will most likely die in the next month, the humane thing to do was put her down within the week. She also said that if she kept deteriorating she might actually pass that night. Ended up with a bill for $800 for 4 hours of “vet work”.

Took her to the LSU vet school that night and they said she had a serious infection but it wasn’t going to kill her and nothing was wrong with her pancreas, after several tests and everything. We ended up putting her in the dog ICU though and she stayed there for four days while the antibiotics and IV fluids and everything else kicked in. Ended up with a bill less than $2k for the entire stay in the ICU.

Obviously it was still a ton of $ but we became lifetime fans of the Vet School after that. Can’t recommend them enough.

My 9 year old yellow lab had this exact surgery in January--he tore the entire thing. He was limping badly for about a month (we initially thought he pulled a muscle acting a fool in the pool), but it was not getting better.

Rene Baumer, DVM did it. He is at Metairie Small Animal Hospital in the Lakeview branch (on Robert E. Lee Blvd.).

It ran around $2500 or so (what I recall).

Ol boy walks just fine now.

My dog, Pitch, had this surgery. Never woke up.

He was an Aussie Shep mix. To this day they're not quite sure what happened in the operating room.

Good luck.

The cost should be about half that. Keep in mind that chances are really good he will need his opposite knee repaired in the next couple of years.
