I understand writing it, but why would anybody actually say it?

I don't think I have ever heard anyone over the age of ten actually say "X-mas."

Right, that's why I said a "small" group of people

Even recognizing this as a group of people gives too much credence to the be offended by everything crowd. A few nutjobs aren't setting any trends.

Good enough for me. People who would be offended by stuff like this rarely have any concept of history

It's become so secularized that people of any faith (or lack thereof) will celebrate it. My SO's roommates are atheists who celebrate it.

If if offends you, your taking it way too seriously.

If is irks you a little, cool. But how are you offended?

Christ MAS

Nothing in this but worship of Christ

Civilizations have had winter celebrations for millennia.

They did it for ages before Christ existed, and they will continue to do it for ages.

To most people, Christmas is about being with your family and exchanging gifts.

No matter what you label it, people will continue to do it because they enjoy it.

Doesn't offend me, but gives me the impression that they're not celebrating "Christ"mas... just another gift/stocking/Santa/day off work thing to them.

True?

I don't think someone who considered themselves a Christian would carelessly leave His name out of they day that they're supposedly celebrating His birth.

Then again, plenty so-called Christians use the words "god-damn" like their God is their favorite curse word, so who knows what people think about before they speak?

It's not leaving his name out. The Greek letter X (Chi) has been used to mean "Christ" since the very early days of the religion.

Have you never seen the Chi Rho symbol used to represent Christ?

it's a X and a P, the first two letters of the word "Christ" in Greek (xpistos).

I guess the only way to know then, would be to ask that person why he/she did it.

In general, I don't think most people are smart enough to know the history you just cited. (I'm not, dammit, and like to consider myself above average smart... although I may not be.)

I think X is just a short way to write Christ in Christmas. Lazy would be my immediate assumption.

This . I was always certain that Christmas simply 'usurped' a pagan holiday/celebration anyway.
