Pretty much everything you use electronics for can be tracked. I have an app that turns on my phone GPS, wifi, microphone, and can turn on both cameras from my computer.

Lost my phone once, and told it to turn on the GPS and take a picture. Google maps said it was pretty much in my driveway, and the picture I got was from underneath my truck. Walked out and picked it up from underneath the truck.

If you don't want to be tracked, don't use anything electronic or go anywhere with wifi cameras. Oh yeah, I have also gotten on CCTV cameras from other places and turned them and zoomed them via my computer.

You don't have to use the internet or have a phone

that's what i'm doing. It's just pretty creepy knowing that just going about your life doing inconspicuous tasks and all of a sudden three days later you get some email or ad from Google that reminds you of that task.
Just frickin creepy man.

Me either. I'm sure that won't be a popular opinion on this board, but I find more convenience than fear from these kind of things. Things I need or want are damn near brought to me because of all of the tracking information. I'm not naive and I don't believe they have altruistic reasons for what they collect, but I don't think they're out to get me either.

They're trying to make their products and services as customized and targeted as possible. I can live with it, so far.

This has been happening for more than a decade now. Was it a bit unsettling in the beginning? Sure. But I wouldn't call it "creepy".

Have you ever checked the Maps feature that shows everywhere your google phone has been in the last few years
IIRC, your GPS has to be on for this to work. It hasn't ever recorded my movements unless the GPS is on

I bought a Nvidia Shield the other day from Best Buy.
Searched Amazon and Newegg and saw that i could get it for the same price from Best Buy. Went to the Millerville location and bought it and 3 days later i'm still getting pop up ads for accessories for this damn thing.

By proxy, sure. How many records requests/subpeonas/NSL's does Google get from the government every year?

Eta- the government can only spy on its citizens because of these companies. The Apple FBI debacle is a great example.

If you use gmail as your primary email, go search "new bill" in google.

That is very disconcerting to me

You could throw ATT,Apple & Verizon into that pot as well.

You can't reason with some of these people. These are the same guys who think getting fired from a private company over your comments is a free speech violation.

Is someone forcing you to use Google and all its products? Seems we are still free.

this has been inevitable since the internet was made available to the public. there will be very little privacy in the future since everything will be "wired" into the web. Everything from your coffee pot to your house to your car. "They" will know everything.
