Every Coonass is a Cajun, not every Cajun is a coonass.
It's one of those, "if you have to ask" things.

You live in North La don't you?

It's a bit like the n word. Some of us Cajuns use the term as a way to make it our own. I don't think it's ok for others to say it though so I don't use it either.

No... A Coonass doesn't= everyone residing in La either..
Had some prick from Jersey of all places ask if I was while at a conference ... to this Day I think I would have been justified in stabbing him with a butter knife ..

Always thought it meant Cajun, without any negative implication.

I grew up with family that's so cajun that my grandparents speak fluent French and my great grandmother spoke French almost exclusively.
Coonass = cajun. That's how we've always used it. It may be derogatory, but it's like the N-word for black people, kinda.

If you live along Bayou Lafourche you're a coonass
If you live along Hwy 90 or I-10 you're a Cajun
If you live North of I-10 you're a redneck

My Dad always said we are some proud coon-arse.
Cajun= Coon-arse where I'm from.
Not to be confused with Coons

She shouldn't be using that term in a workplace. I'm sure she'd get fired for dropping an N bomb as well.
