Does anyone on here meditate?

I'm not talking about thinking about your life before you fall asleep, I'm talking about sitting down on the floor and doing full on Buddhist/Zen meditation.
Just wondering what approach you take, how often/long you do it, and what benefits, if any, you've found come from it.
I've been reading a book called the Mind Illuminated that really lays it out in an easily digestible way, but I'm a total novice.

Do you have a good set of headphones? Download the Headspace app, find a quiet place where your kids/wife aren't going to come hit you with something for a while, and thank me later.

I never have. But I had an MRI on my brain last week, which required me to sit completely still with my eyes closed for about 45 minutes with a cacophony of weird noises persisting all around me. My mind drifted off into this really disconnected state, and I was a little disoriented when it was done. But I also felt refreshed and relaxed, and I realized that that's probably what meditation feels like. So I've been thinking about trying it at some point in the near future.

Only meditation i need in my life right now is to sit back in my chair and look over at this for a minute. It reminds me why I push through everyday with purpose.
This and.............................
I masturbate in the shower daily.

I've done guided meditation before, but I cant stay focused long enough to do it by myself. My brain wanders and then starts telling itself stories and following tangents.
Out like a light.

quote:
For beginners and experienced meditators alike, Waking Up is for people who understand that meditation isn’t just about feeling better in the moment. Real meditation changes a person’s view of the world.
WHY IS WAKING UP DIFFERENT FROM OTHER MEDITATION APPS?
* Meditation is often taught as though it were an ancient version of an executive stress ball. But it’s more like the Large Hadron Collider. Waking Up users quickly understand that there are fundamental discoveries to be made in the laboratory of their own minds.
* Waking Up guides you through a 50-day introductory course before unlocking access to an ongoing series of daily meditations. If you’re a novice, you need this. (And if you’re an experienced meditator, you probably do, too.) All meditations are created and led by Sam Harris.
* Waking Up also contains a growing curriculum of short talks by Sam Harris on a wide variety of topics relevant for deepening your practice.
* Waking Up never resorts to gimmicks or pseudoscience. The app contains only what you need to make fundamental insights into the nature of your mind.
“I’ve been incredibly impressed with this app. Whether you want to sharpen your mind or experience more peace, this can help in dramatic fashion. The power of its progression is hard to overstate.”

ABOUT SAM HARRIS
Sam Harris is the author of five New York Times bestsellers, including Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion. His writing and public lectures cover a wide range of topics—neuroscience, meditation, moral philosophy, religion, rationality—but generally focus on how a growing understanding of ourselves and the world is changing our sense of how we should live.
Sam received a degree in philosophy from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from UCLA. He has practiced meditation for over 30 years and has studied with many Tibetan, Indian, Burmese, and Western meditation teachers, both in the United States and abroad. He has spent a total of two years in silent retreat under the guidance of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche, Sayadaw Upandita, Joseph Goldstein, and others.

My wife got me started on Transcendental Meditation.

It’s one of those things you’ll do for a week and then give up. Like diets, learning a foreign language, working out, etc

I forget that The Simpsons used to be a fantastic tv show.

Fair enough, but I’ve been doing it twice a day for just over three weeks now without missing a session. I’m just starting to get to the point where I can focus on my breath for periods of time (probably just 5 minutes at this point) without my mind wandering. Seems like one of those things that would take years to ‘master’ though which is why I just wanted to see what experiences people have had.

Meditation isn't the sole domain of eastern religions. The Bible says to meditate on God's word. So in that respect, yes I have.

I've been doing Transcendental Meditation for the last 6 months or so. 20 minutes, twice a day. I'll occasionally miss a session, but overall it really helped me with my anxiety, depression, and overall mental state.
To each is own, but I've found it to be very helpful.

I have used headspace.com quite effectively. Especially when dealing with stress and insomnia. I started with the free part, then decided to subscribe.
