Get one just in case. You never know when you might need it

Passport not necessary for a closed-loop cruise.... A cruise that leaves one city in the United States and returns to that same city at the end of the cruise.

Birth certificate + drivers license is all you need.

Pretty much nailed it. Except you don't need one to enter/exit the ports. You'll only need one if you have to fly home or something from another country.

Not the kids', though.

To the OP, don't worry about passports for this cruise. Use your kids' birth certificates and get an ID made for them at the DMV. You'll just have to purchase new passports for your kids in 4-5 years anyway (assuming you're not planning to leave the country with them again before they turn 18).

To their magical island? Kids and adults.

Their island is in the Bahamas...

FYI- if your bring a shirt, pillowcase, etc. The first day have your steward bring it to the cast members and all the characters will all sign it and return it to you before you get off the ship...

Adults should have a passport if there's a chance of leaving the country. Should have one anyway really. Its part of being an adult.
