quote:A burg is/was a name for a castle/town. A burger is/was someone from a burg. It was not anyone's last name.
It’s mentally weird to comprehend that before then, the word burger (something billions of people instantly think of as a sandwich) was just someone’s last name. Like “that Burger is an interesting fellow.”
I mean, I guess it came to be a surname, but only in the way names like "smith" did.

Sort of. The Earl of Hamburger invented hamburger steak (basically ground beef). Louie's Lunch in New Haven, CT is credited as the first place to put the ground beef patty between two pieces of bread to create what we now call a hamburger today.

According to the Library of Congress, “Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut, is recognized as the birthplace of the hamburger sandwich.
In 1900, a hurried customer asked Louis Lassen for something he could eat on the go. Thinking fast, Louis placed his own blend of ground steak trimmings between two slices of toasted bread — creating the very first hamburger sandwich.”

Have you guys never seen the 70’s Christmas cartoon “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”. This is the Burgermeister Meisterburger. Burgermeister being the rough equivalent of a mayor. Villain in the cartoon.

Earl of Sandwich is credited for inventing the sandwich so he could eat and play cards / gamble.
