I had a roommate who is a pathological liar. This dude lied about shite that he didn't need to lie about. Is this a mental illness? He's been confronted about it numerous times and nothing changes. I randomly ran across this paragraph and it described this guy dead on.
quote:

a pathological liar. This person may not be completely rooted in reality, believing the lies they tell, often in an effort to remedy low self esteem. Unlike telling a few fibs here and there, or slightly exaggerating the truth once in a while, the pathological liar lies about literally every aspect of his or her life. From how much was spent on dinner last night to talking about the last time the dog was bathed, the pathological liar feels that every bit of communication has strategic meaning positioned for his or her gain.

My roommate in college. he would tell people stuff like he won huge at craps over the weekend, won the lottery, etc. Guys would come up to me talking about it and I would be so confused knowing none of it was true.

One of my good friends is, we have just stopped trying to call him out on it because he will just go on and on making shite up. Its mainly small lies so its not really a big deal, just kinda annoying knowing he thinks we are believing it.

worked with one. This guy would steal something you laid on a desk if you turned away for a second then deny it - even though he was the only one standing there.

this country has a growing population of sociopaths in it. Interesting statistics/studies coming out about this recently.

Guy I know from high school. He would lie about the smallest shite, like telling you he just got back from the grocery store when you know he didn't. All his lying has led him to a life of drugs and staying in trouble with the law.

I sure do. The worst part is that if you ask an innocent question about a part of the story that just doesn't add-up, they get all pissed off and defensive. And I don't even mean a situation where you're trying to call them out or prove them wrong; you could be legitimately confused since their stories don't match-up.

They very frequently have massively overstated senses of their own self-worth (obviously), and I think that's at the root of their problem. In order for them to believe those things about themselves, they have to believe other little "white" lies that they drop here and there. It's all part of the script for them.
