i passed the class and the shooting portion but never actually applied to get it. I kept thinking of how much responsibility came with it. Plus there are so many situations the instructor talk about where there is such a fine line between doing the right thing and going to jail yourself. It's weird. The class actually talked me out of it. That was 3-4 years ago. I have actually been thinking about retaking it and getting the license now just because of all of the things that have happened lately.

Eh, those lines aren't that fine IMO.

I didn't get one to be a hero. I got one to protect myself, my family, and those around me in the highly unlikely situation we have a close up encounter with a true threat.

Most responsible owners will tell you that you probably begin avoiding potential conflicts as a result of carrying. It certainly occurs to me that way. Last thing I want to do is pull a Zimmerman and put myself in a situation where I am unsure of the degree of threat I face, and therefore have to pull my weapon without the certainty that I'm in the right.

As an aside, movie theaters are places I absolutely always carry, even before Aurora.

I have lived in Lafayette for 35 years. My heart was broken last night. I have been meaning to take a CC class and get my license. Last night was the pushing point. My family will not be a victim to the next jackass/deranged individual that wants to do harm. Everyone should do there part and protect their family. If more of us exercised our rights then the world would be safer.

I do have a CC, I do carry almost everywhere I go, and I regularly visit the range to practice and train with my sidearm.

Open Carry

I'm all about gun rights, but I don't understand the thinking here. If there is a situation where a shooter is planning to start a massacre in an area where someone is open carrying, who do you think will be his first target?

I don't have a license but I always have a gun on me. If caught in a situation where I have to use my gun to defend myself or family outside of the home, a ticket for not having a conceal license is the least of my worries.

if someone is coming to rob you in public, I doubt you will see it coming, so the criminal will most assuredly have the upper hand, and if he has a gun, will have his gun on you before you can react

This is why you always pay attention to everyone around you when you're out in public. Be aware of your surroundings. In the army we called it "situational awareness". If someone is out there looking to rob someone, they're looking at everyone already. They'll know who is and who isn't paying attention. And just from the act of them knowing that you are aware of there presence, they'll more than likely pick another easier mark than you.

If you don't feel safe walking the streets of America without a firearm, then yes, you have serious mental issues.

Unless you're in an anti-2A state or you have a record, I can't see why you wouldn't go through the relatively easy process of getting a license. Especially in the Southeast, where it is quite simple.

I think it will more than likely deter them from ever thinking about it. Look at all these "mass shootings" we've seen lately and you'll notice they all take place in "gun free zones". These cowards pick places where they know they'll be the only one there with a firearm. You never see them going down to the local gun, pawn shop, or police station to do their cowardly work. No, they pick places where they know they're safe to kill without the chance of their victims being able to fight back.

Speaking as a retired LEO: I always carry. I carried for twenty years on the job, it is no burden for me. I use common sense when out and about. I sit facing the door in public places, am aware of my surroundings, and look things over when I get out of my vehicle to go into a store, parking lot, etc. Call it what you will, but if you ask me what I am scared of, I will say "not a damn thing". If God forbid I find myself in a dangerous situation, I want the option to have a say in the matter.

Yep, all of this, all of which is arguably more important that carrying at all. The other day I walked out of my office building into a largely empty parking deck, late at night, eyes glued to my phone as I meander toward my car. Not common for me, but talk about stupid.

All kidding aside, I honestly hope for your sake and your family's sake you never find yourself in a situation where you need to defend yourself. I say that because of something I posted earlier, yeah it's a cliche but it's still the truth. When seconds count, the police are minutes away.

He doesn't want to carry, no big deal for me. He'll most likely be fine.

I only care when people start spouting off about the paranoia of those who do carry.

Someone so afraid that they don't want to go in public without a gun attached to their hip? That goes beyond preparedness. That's letting fear and irrational thoughts control your life.

Quit trying to psychoanalyze everyone. I carry on trips and such and can handle myself just fine.
You wouldn't be spouting off if someone carrying saved your life in a similar situation.

me too

and I believe that if I was ever in that situation, me pulling a gun would more than likely just escalate that situation into a new, more dangerous level
