There is something called default truth theory that, in summary, says that most people will take people at their word.

For example, if you are doing business with someone and a few people advise you not to because that person is shady. You confront that person & they assure you they are legit. Even if you have some evidence that shows otherwise, because you heard from the horses mouth you are likely to ignore what others have said & believe that person.

Im on the opposite side which is worse because the percentage of "shady" people are a lot less than those who are not, but I think everyone is full of shite & always has a self serving agenda.

Fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.

I basically don’t trust anyone. Literally the only thing that I can trust in life is that OweO is going to start a shitty thread.

I took you at your word on a bet and you welched. You’ve proven to be an untrustworthy person.

Even before you Welched on me, I don’t trust anyone.

I document just about everything

I wish things were like they used to be.

Deals were done on a bar napkin and a handshake.

A man’s word used to mean something.

People like you have ruined it

It depends on what the “business” is. I’d trust a librarian more than a journalist.

Brace yourself. You know what’s coming

Looking at the etymology, your source is correct, but both terms are viable.
