Spent my first 25 years in AL and I don't sound like a hick. Heavy accents are a choice.

No. I have a pretty damn strong country accent and I know some folks are judging me because of it, so I don't let it bother me and judge others. To be honest, it doesn't matter anyway. People guess I'm from Texas. I'm not. I'm from NELA.

When I moved to Ohio, they made me feel like an IDIOT for the way I talked. They told me I sounded like, AND I QUOTE “A slave” when I said “yes sir/ma’am and no sir/ma’am” and that I sounded stupid when I said “y’all.” That’s just the way I grew up.

Rest assured outside The South if someone hears a southern accent right away they drop you 50 points on their imaginary IQ standard of you

There are two accents that drive me nuts - the modern valley girl vocal fry per that AOC chick and a nasally high pitch country girl. While they are both on opposite ends of the spectrum socially, and most likely politically; they manage to meet in the middle to melt my eardrums.

Bad grammar is more of a turnoff to me than any accent. I actually enjoy listening to different accents and even to people who can mimic accents. I just don't take seriously the opinion of anyone who displays bad grammar and/or excessive profanity. I'm not talking about the casual use of "ain't" or similar minor lapses in speech. We all tend to use a looser form of grammar when we speak as opposed to when we are writing. Examples of what I am referring to:
"He done found hisself out of a f---ing job that hard-headed mother f---er."
"I have went to the store and still can't find what I been needin'."
You get the picture. By the way, I love me some good ole down the bayou Cajun accent, cher. Dat's fa sho. My favorite accent and favorite kind of people.

I don’t even have a “southern accent” though. I may say some words like I’m from the south, but I don’t sound like a redneck idiot.

I’m not sure there are any southern drawls worse than my own.
