re: Do you ever research all about a random region or city as if you were going to live there?

If I ever hear of a city on the news or in a movie, I’ve never heard of. I will always Google it and spend about 10 minutes on its Wikipedia page.
It’s a pretty neat party trick. My wife always says how are you able to make small talk with everybody and I tell her I just ask where they’re from and 9 times out of 10 I will pick up something to talk about from there.

Wherever there's a Whole Foods, you're typically in a good area for at least a mile or two.
On road trips, I use Chick-fil-A as a guide to indicate which exit to stop at for food. Chick-fil-A’s are usually only located in nicer areas.

Yeah I researched Antarctica but they don’t have Canes so I’m not going anymore

My wife is addicted to Zillow.
I love going to check out Zillow to see what I can get when people are talking about a random place.

One of the night ones of Tokyo has put a strong desire to visit, and makes me wish I lived there.
Wherever Japan is on your list of places to visit, move it up. Recently got back from two weeks there and it was a fantastic trip and a very, very easy place to be, even with the language barrier. They deal with folks do often that don't speak Japanese, that they know how to smoothly navigate communicating with you. It's also a bit sad when you get back and realize that there are so many better ways to do things and that the US is really hampered by a few elements of our society that they culturally just won't allow.
I spent years searching about places, going on Google street view, watching Youtube tourist videos. Always thought I was kind of weird for it.
Another thing I'd do is go watch videos of folks driving around towns. I'd go to places I know really well, like Pittsburgh (my hometown) and see if the video matches up with my local knowledge and see if the "feel" is the same.

I look into other former colonial countries but not Europe per se.

Are you an old hippie? Vermont is the last place I would move I think. I think I would take any border town over any town in Vermont.

Naw I'm actually a 40 year old black man

Long story short, we try to visit every state and went to Vermont twice. Fall and Winter. Fell in love with the place.

Are two outliers to this method I have discovered

We started this years ago preparing for a move. Researching the cities my husband's company has offices in. Now we are redoing it preparing for retirement.
