Some other things I thought of:
Video chat with my sister in Germany on my phone
3d movies
Turn on my alarm, A/C, and lights with my phone
Code readers for cars
I guess it all has to do with the development of the microprocessor and internet. One of my teachers went to Harvard many moons ago and told me that their ONE computer there was as big as a house and was barely faster than them doing the problems themselves. IIRC, he told me there were only a few private computers back then, and Harvard and MIT had two of them. Said MIT didn't have one for a while and had to come to Harvard to use theirs. Blows my mind
I'm only 30 and it is crazy. I can't even imagine how you old timers feel

the traffic thing is what i cant get over.
the concept of crowd-sourcing highway conditions is pure genius.
i was coming home at 1am a few nights ago and i got a waze alert saying a big accident had just occurred about 12 miles up the road and traffic was building.
turns out the stopped traffic was just after a hill and i was already slowing thanks to the road condition icons on my GPS screen.
other idiots went flying over the hill only to slam on their brakes when they saw a dead stop right after that.
waze makes me feel so much safer on road trips its ridiculous.

my grandmother passed away about 10 years ago.
born in 1903.
its incredible to me airplanes and cars barely existed and in her lifetime she watched the development of both.
1900 - 2000 >>> 2000 - 2014

The rate at which technology is progressing is insane.

You are comparing 100 yrs to 14. There is no doubt in my mind that 2000-2100>>>>1900-2000.

i dont see replicants or flying cars in the mid 2010s so this century is already a failure to me.

You have to actually look at what happened back then and not take things for granted. Engines, steel, electricity, a reliable sewer/water system, roads, oil, manufacturing, etc. As a whole, 1900-2000 had much more advancement than 2000-2014. Like I said earlier, I thing the most important new stuff are things like microprocessors. I can't think of too many more areas that didn't progress solely based on that.

I think of all the things I thought were cool and that I really wanted as a kid, but didn't have: a calculator, a camera (still & video), video games, a computer (think Commodore 64), a walkie-talkie. All of these are tertiary things any smartphone has.

Being a teenager in the late 50's I am amazed at comparing today's world with that time. I often wonder what it would be like if some how we could just look forward about a hundred years to see that future time period. What new inventions, cures for certain medical conditions, etc. etc.?

i was listening to a podcast i downloaded in about 10 seconds while driving to sulphur, and mid-way i wanted to make sure i knew where this place was...so i clicked the address i had loaded on google calendars and started nav, which gave me play-by-play directions while the podcast kept playing in the background
so
yeah

I'm amazed daily that I have a device that fits in my hand that can tell me where in the world I am and if I ask it (by TALKING to it) to direct me to the nearest dry cleaner, it will give me directions and an ETA based on traffic conditions.
NONE of that was able to be done 20 years ago.

Seriously. We've gone from basic huge cell phones, slow arse desktop computers and dial up internet to having handheld computer/phone/TV/game device that operates at ridiculously fast speeds. The fricking bar graph for the technological advancements in the past 15 or so years would closely resemble th3 flight path of a shuttle launching space.

oh and that podcast was teaching me about evolutionary biology and consumerism...and evolutionary biology in general. the first subject didn't even exist 10 years ago #4thWall

I have to agree that 1900-2000 has had greater advancements so far, but we're only 15 years into the new millennium.
Considering that major cities didn't even have electricity at the turn of the 20th century and where we ended up at the beginning of the 21st, it's really no debate.
