Do you consider graduating high school a significant accomplishment?

I see people with yard signs and balloons outside their houses congratulating their high school graduate. And that's cool. High school graduation only happens once, so make it a fun event for the kid.

But what I don't get is these banners people are hanging outside their houses. Banners hung on fences, on garage doors, etc. A big banner congratulating their graduate and even a picture of the grad. Implying that high school graduation is a significant accomplishment and the kid has accomplished something spectacular.

I'm all for making it a fun event, but is it really an accomplishment to brag about? Aren't you supposed to graduate high school in the 2020s? Is graduating from high school really something special now?

It’s a significant life milestone, but not really much of an accomplishment.

No. I didn't even get a ring because even at the dumb age of 18 I thought... it was more of something you are supposed to do... what's the big deal?

Important time/milestone in your life, yes.

Significant accomplishment? Absolutely not.

I view it more as a celebration for the parents finally being able to kick them freeloaders out of the house after supporting them for 18 years.

Yes

All that stuff is just part of the times i guess. Like kids writing shite on top of their caps. We would’ve never been allowed to do that.

They had little real estate sizes signs you could order to put in your yard but that was about it. I graduated in 2003. Went out to eat after then met up with friends and got wasted. Simpler times.

I didn't even go to my law school graduation - my undergrad in college was the only one I cared about. high school was fun for the parties we had after - but I got Mono at one that put me down for a month.

For some, yes. Need to judge on a case by case basis.

You don’t get a ring to wear after high school. You get a ring to turn it around and thump freshman on the head to show them their proper place.

I get celebrating someone’s achievements. It’s kind of socially acceptable now, whereas 30 years ago, you didn’t see this type of stuff

A high school diploma, however, is not as big of an academic accomplishment as it once was. 50 years ago, 35% of students never finished high school. Now, you have to basically never come to school, or get kicked out, in order to not get a diploma. They are getting pretty unremarkable.

It’s just an excuse to party. We had a party for a kindergartener. The post- doctoral party will probably rival an OT wedding.

No big deal here. No signs, no cars decorated.

Areas where HS graduation rates are low, that's where you'll find celebrations.

As a parent of one high school grad a couple of years and another next week, getting them through high school is on me. College is on them.

It a mile stone for sure but just like everything else some will over do it….

But don’t get me started on 7th grade graduation, 5th grade graduation, and kindergarten graduation…… those fall under the “everyone gets a trophy” mentality….

I mean, you're not wrong. In specific communities its a big deal and I get it. It needs to be encouraged.
