It's very uncomfortable because I know my neighboring office mates can hear plain as day but at the same time, I don't want to say something to the client that pisses him/her off and I lose money.

Now I'm sure blacks do the same when talking to other black people but dammit it makes me uncomfortable as frick when another white person assumes I'm racist just because I'm white.

Welcome to the South. I have no trouble saying anything about it to anyone.

I agree that white privilege is BS, but do Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Thandie Newton, and Sage Steele look white to you?

They would look pretty damn silly if they referred to themselves as white.

My thought too.

I had a young black man come into my office regarding a criminal matter. During our conversation, he said "that is why I don't like white people", then quickly said "oh, but not you." I told him I don't care, and ended up getting his case dismissed.

Other than when part of the facts in an employment case, I won't have someone dropping N-word in the office.

The POS kind. I'm not posting where I work on here for obvious reasons and I'm not going to risk losing a sale by telling my client to shut the frick up with their racist talk. If they buy from me because they feel comfortable with me, then so be it. I never agree with them in any way when they talk like that, I just sit quietly and let them sink their own ship. It still irritates me though.

Race relations in this country are nowhere near where they need to be.

They look both to me. Because people like them have always considered themselves to be black, you've accepted that as social norm and therefore think they don't look "white" because they don't fit your molded definition of "white". Think about it.

My thought too.

Completely understandable. My supervisors and owner don't hear them say it, since the door is usually closed and their offices are not near mine. But I'm pretty sure my surrounding office mates can hear. Other white co-workers have expressed the same concerns as me. This happens to them too.

I'm sure if you just pass some more laws and force people to be inclusive everything will work out fine!

But what line of work do you work in? Also, why are clients even using that kind of language? How is it related to your line of work?

You could ask them not to use that type of language in the office. If they are going to be dickheads you should start scheduling your appts outside the office.

I'm in the banking industry. Their language isn't related to the work, it's just part of small talk, which is why it's so uncomfortable.
