. Only if they do it while drunk, if they are sober they get points deducted.

You think it’s easy?

Do you have any idea how long it takes to become a river pilot?

You can go to med school and become a doctor quicker than you can become a river pilot.

Or you could lie and falsify records like someone we know.

My wife’s family was pilots but her dad decided to go to college instead so he was black sheep also
His uncles never forgave him but he did very well in life also
For the doctor comparison consider yeah same time commitment but it would be a lot harder if there were only one medical school in America and that is how tight they keep the entrance into the training portal

And yes a lot of investigation on the legit of it
My father in law (who did not become the pilot) moved his entire us corporstion international dock to Mississippi to avoid the pilot and New Orleans dock overcharges and lack of work solutions

From my experience all boat captains are the same. Lifted truck, multiple divorces, house broke, complained about EVERYTHING, questionable hygiene, child support etc

Then you don’t have very much experience

Crew Boat captains are a different breed.

Anyone that knows anything about the commercial marine industry will agree

The only difference is, is if that crew boat is DP1 or DP2. Anything other than that, they’re the bottom of the barrel.

I’m Virginia for the navy ships there are 2 different pilots. 1 guides you through the channel and they make about 270. The harbor pilot that brings you in to the pier makes about 400. A lot more risk with the latter. I generally enjoy talking with the channel pilot more than the harbor pilot when I’m driving

But with that comes long hours and high stress.

No, no it doesn't. This is the BS they push to keep up the nepotism, but it's horseshite.

Crew boat captains are the most asinine bunch of Mariners to ever work on the water. I would bet not a single one of them knows the difference between DP 0, DP 1, or DP 2

while it is a job with responsibility, at the end of the day they're glorified plant operators who are grandfathered in to a racket of a good ole boy system. however, the biggest difference between a river pilot and a plant operator is that the river pilot can pay straight cash for his F-350 (that he doesn't truly need) while the plant operator has to finance his F-150 (that he doesn't truly need).

other than that, they're pretty much the same person.

How well are other marine pilots or captain paid?

My wife has a friend whose husband is a crewboat captain. He drives an uber on his time off. He does have five kids with two oh them in college though.

Kevin Alario and Cory Heitmeier were relatively young and inexperienced, but those disadvantages were outweighed by their potential to add to the group's political clout in Baton Rouge

If Gould's faction failed, Cory Heitmeier and Chance Gould wouldn't have become pilots for at least two more years, costing them $600,000 each in pilot income.

The above quote is from a 2001 NOLA.com article. Both Heitmeier and John Alario’s sons are pilots, for obvious reasons. Alario is about as powerful as it’s gets in Louisiana politics. I’ve always been intrigued by the guy the time I’ve spent around him. Quiet..quiet but powerful.

I wouldn’t pride myself in having experience in that industry. Unfortunately, I’ve been around a lot of skippers.

Tug, jack-up, crewboat, supply boat, dive boat, ultility etc. all of those “captains” are the same
