Yeah. Pretty sure the young/newer pilots have to “buy in” and they don’t start making big money til at least a few years, probably longer.

Not sure what they make in 2019, but circa 2005 i dated a girl whose father and three brothers were all river pilots (nah, no chance of any nepotism there...) and they each made about $400k.. not sure if it’s increased to $700k in < 15 years, but ya never know.
Guess I need to add my high school guidance counselor to the list for not mentioning this career path.

High stress for short, specific periods of time.. but the hours are 14 days on/14 off, and when they are working they are treated like absolute kings, with a crew who waits on them hand and foot, their own island called Pilot Town and all sorts of perks.
I will say that if they eff up, it’s a really big deal.. but i’ll take that trade off for a half mill a year.

Not at all. He's right. Very easy job. Some of the most arrogant, entitled people I've ever been around were the NOBRA pilots. I worked at Tri-G Marine Supply for a couple of years in the mid/late 90s. They would use our crew boat to get to the ships they were piloting. They were only making $250k or so then, and they still bitched about having to pay for a 50 cent newspaper.
It was a racket then and it's a racket now. It's a closed system, basically. Nepotism on the highest level.

Do you have any idea how long it takes to become a river pilot?

The same goes for someone driving a crew boat, pretty much. It's not a hard gig. They stand on the deck and tell the people running the ship what to do while they're in the harbor or waterway. It's the same waterway they run again and again. They know it like the backs of their hands, as the cliche goes. There is absolutely nothing remarkable about their job compared to someone running a 10,500 HP towboat pushing a massive tow in high water.

Same here in the Coastal Virginia area

Their hours are short and they don't work hard. They have to work at all hours of the day and night, but so what when you're making so much for doing so little.

From what I have seen, lots of school and lots of time away from home, both gaining experience and working
Also defending possums, banging a chick with big tits, and convincing themselves Mustangs are decent cars, but that situation only seems isolated from my few interactions with potential candidates.
