Is it safe to use Drano in a dishwasher? I would assume that it's ok to run it with Drano a cycle with no dishes in there. Anyone had this problem?

Pull the dishwasher out, unhook the drain hose, and blow it out with an air compressor.

This. Our dishwasher drains into our garbage disposal, so I had to unhook that hose and run hot water through it and flush it out.

Clean the filter in the dishwasher first.

How do I access this? Are all dishwashers different, or are they pretty universal on filter location?

Find the serial #/model # or however much info you can on it and google it. Most likely you'll be able to find a parts diagram that will guide you to it.

You can ask google, "how to ..." This is not a snarky response. There will likely be a video to show you how to do it. Most dishwashers are very similar, even if you don't know the exact model number. The model number should be on a tag on the side of the door or just inside the door.

BTW, don't use the draino. It's definitely a clogged filter.

Dishwashers are designed to either chop up the good bits so that they will pass through the drain pipe (after being filtered for the large chuncks, broken glass, bones, etc), or they have a readily accessible type of filter that needs to be cleaned regularly (European style).

NO, it's bad for the motor plastic and filters to run draino.

Much much easier to remove the drain line from the sink and force air back into the dishwasher to clear the drain.

Really you need to clean the filter area inside the unit. On all dishwasher made now you can clean the filter, unless you have a filterless Whirlpool model.

Five of my "dishwasher not draining calls" this year were due to them installing a new garbage disposal and then not taking the plug out. OP did you ave a garbage disposal installed recently. (I seriously ask that every time now, though once I'm, in the house, I want my trip charge, lol)

Mine plugged up last year and the hose was full of goop. I blew it out and read about using vinegar every so often. My wife runs the dishwasher empty with vinegar about once a month. No issues since.
