Disasters and Mandatory Evacuation Orders

Reading the forest fire thread link about the evacuation orders got me thinking.
We always hear government officials ordering "Mandatory Evacuations" but where is the legal authority for such an order? I never understood this concept. If you want to stay in your house, I don't see where the government can force you to leave. Can anyone point to some statute that gives them the right to drag you kicking and screaming from your residence and to forcibly relocate you?

pretty sure it is a state thing, some do have fines if you do not evacuate
most states cannot enforce it, but they state the "mandatory evacuation" order so that if you die or get injured, you can't sue

During a hurricane, a person failing to comply with evacuation orders may not be rescued or provided other lifesaving assistance after the onset of and during tropical storm winds or higher at the Louisiana coast.

FYI: Mandatory evacuation expenses are normally covered by homeowner's insurance without a deductible...

Thanks. I looked for that before and couldn't find it. That law actually makes sense and is what I would have written. Wonder how something that sensible slipped past our legislators? Must have been passed on a Friday when no one was voting.

They would like your fire dept not to feel oblidged to risk life and expensive equipment when you realize you are going to die in a fire.
