Did you take martial arts classes as a kid and do you remember any of it
Posted by Jack Ruby on 7/9/20 at 12:18 am51
I was a mean Tang Soo Do mofo as a 5-year-old. Today, I remember virtually none of it.
It's a damn shame.
Wonder what they'd do if you walked back in today with a black belt (which you actually earned as a kid) and started sparring like a madman.

I did and no.
I did take boxing lessons for 6 months a few years ago. So I learned how to throw a punch less wildly doing that. Seems more beneficial that kicks in a street fight if I'm ever in one.

Back in the day we were basically limited to Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do, which are both kind of the same and not that effective in real fights.
Krava Maga, BJJ, Muay Thai/Kickboxing, or even basic boxing would have been much more useful.
Thanks 90s trends....

I've always figured any type of karate would be utterly pointless in a real, rage induced type altercation. I just don't see myself doing a crane kick with precision timing at a drunken brawler coming at me in a bar parking lot at 2:15 a.m. There is just no way anyone would be able to sweep the feet and karate chop a dude down in real life.
Don't believe at all. Never did, never will. Karate Kid wasa a great 80's movie but it ain't gonna help when you piss of Kappa Theta Alpha on the parade grounds after an LSU game and 12 of those frickers are coming at ya. Nope, you're getting your arse stomped that night I dont care if you were 2nd degree Blue belt in Foo Man Foo and won regionals in 1998.

But none are as effective as a low kick to the shin or knee joint.
I swear, if you ever get in a fight and first thing other dude does is throw a hard shin kick...GTFO of there.
The next scariest guy to fight is a wrestler. Got into a match with a state champ caliber wrestler in college. Tried to throw a kick...He had me wrapped up like a damn Twizzler in 30 seconds.

I wanted to, but my folks said, "You fight enough as it is."

This is what I still remember as a side kick. Looking back, it's just a great way to get crunched in the balls in a street fight.
Yeah, I was in shotokan 4 times a week at 8 years old till 11 when I split karate up with Muay Thai until I was 15.
In retrospect, i would have traded both disciplines for kung fu.
Maybe had i seen Enter the dragon before blood sport..and plus there were no legit kung fu places around..But I was the only 8 year old around trying to get to the kumite. Was even able to do that coin trick with practice.
ETA
Couldn't ever get that bottom brick though.

Where and when did you grow up? Hell I don't think any place in my whole state had anything resmbling these kinds of disciplines back in the day.
The best we ever had in my hometown was an MMA gym around late 90s and early 2000s. It was actually a really cool place but there just weren't enough members.
I knew a couple guys that went there and they did lots of Muay Thai, Boxing, and basic wrestling work. For a small town in Arkansas, it was pretty legit.
It coudo really teach you how to kick someone's arse versus pretty kicks and useless exercises of the 90s dojo guy in a gi.
There was nothing resmbling Kung Fu, though.

Has anyone ever noticed he looks kinda potbellied for a karate champ?
Compared to Bruce, Chuck was pretty stiff, too. His kicks were pretty bad when you watch that whole scene.
He was supposedly a real fighter though. Wasn't he a kickboxing champ in the 60s?

I took Tae Kwon Do as a youngster and Shotokan as a young man. I remember all of it.
