Seems like a bizarrely out of place post in the context of this thread, but go ahead.

So at some point there was a random mutation of a non-rainbow squirrel. That resulted in a rainbow squirrel and it survived in it’s rainbow environment better than non- rainbow squirrels and reproduced....and so on...

Is this how it works?

Not really one mutation usually. More likely squirrels with just slightly altered shades of fur survived and mated and this went on for tens of thousands of years gradually getting more altered.

Like I said in a previous post, there's an evolutionary reason for this. I'm sure they live (or used to live) in some environment with colorful foliage or something.

I think this particular species hails from a certain block radius of the French Quarter.

Anybody who squirrel hunts knows this:

quote:

It travels from tree to tree with jumps of up to 6 m (20 ft). When in danger, the Ratufa indica often freezes or flattens itself against the tree trunk, instead of fleeing.[4] Its main predators are the birds of prey and the leopard.[4] The Giant Squirrel is mostly active in the early hours of the morning and in the evening, resting in the midday. They are typically solitary animals that only come together for breeding.
