Yes had one through my teen years, full motion not the mattress with water tube in it.
Teenage me loved it, 38 year old me thinks I wouldn't enjoy it as much

We had one in the late 80s and 90s, the kind with about 8 big water tubes in it. Loved the bed . Extremely comfortable.
But, it was high maintenance. Every so often we would have to top off the tubes with water and add a pill to keep the water fresh. And it was a real mess when one of the tubes would pop, which happened once a year or so.

In HS I had the big bladder kind inherited from an older sibling, the traditional kind most people think of
Big Sur waterbeds for the win. Full motion with a plain solid wood headboard and footboard for $209. The wood frame pieces were strapped down to the roof of my buddies Fierro. The entire "bed" fit in a suitcase sized box at my feet. We had to drive thru a GAUNTLET of pussy trying to flag us down on the way back to Goodrich Apartments (located next door to El Cid. The good side).

wood frames they come in are uncomfortable and sometimes I would hit them when rolling over in my sleep,
This. Catch the wave wrong turning over and your back felt like someone popped you with a Louisville slugger.

then one of the ones with the tubes in college.
My wife and I had one of the tube style for about 10 years. Gave it to one of our friends and she slept on it for a long time as well.

I bugged the shite out my parents to get me one and they finally relented. I would never admit it to them because I didn't want to deal with the "I told you so" but that was the most uncomfortable POS I have ever tried to sleep on in my life. The temp was never just right. Either too hot or too cold. The waves. The whole 9 yards.

Until the lava lamp fell on it and melted a hole in it.

They’re fantastic and if you ever piss the bed you can just blame it on a leak.
A college roommate of mine had one. He pissed the bed after a night of drinking and debauchery one time. He thought he’d cleaned it up the next day, but a few days later an odor began emitting from his bedroom. A few days later it had become a repulsive stench. Turns out that when he pissed the bed, most of the piss had run off the waterbed mattress and down into the area between the frame and the bottom of the mattress. One of the worst smells I can remember.

I vaguely remember windows open with a garden hose draining the water. You couldn't really sit on them, your arse would perch on that wooden frame.

No, but I lived in my frat brother’s apartment during a summer semester at SLU while he was home. He had a water bed in his room, most uncomfortable thing I had to sleep on…

I had one for a couple of years. Not a fan. Chore to get in or out of.

Nothing beats a shitty springy mattress for fricking on.

Yep for sure back in the day

Waterbeds are definitely a unique staple of 70's - 80's pop culture. As for a good night's sleep or some good old fashioned fornication, they suck big green donkey dicks.

He passed out drunk on it one night when the bed’s heater was off. He woke up hours later and the cold bed had sapped away a lot of his body temperature. Sounded awful.
Of all the shitty things about waterbeds, that was the shittiest. Those things get cold af, so you had to be proactive about heating them up. Add the constant leaks/patching, getting out air bubbles, and difficulty moving around and getting out of bed. As far as general comfort, though, I don't remember them being bad. Seems like the only place I see them nowadays is in headshops.

Both my kids were conceived on a water bed.

When we got married, my wife had a waterbed. It was one of those that had water-filled tubes inside a normal looking mattress. I wasn’t a fan. Always felt like my head was lower than my feet. It wasn’t as bad as those single bladder water beds, but I still didn’t like it.
