I find it hard to believe that Germany would really want another power on their arse (whom of which is remaining neutral). I understand that they thought they were the supreme military... But it just doesn't make sense. Hindsight and whatnot but from the outside looking in, it looks like Britain was facing defeat after Churchill screwed the pooch. Then they sparked confrontation by claiming to intercept a message from Germany.

Do I need to get my tinfoil hat or were we dupped?

They attacked Russia for no reason and started fighting wars on each side of Europe. So I believe that Germany would have done that.

They were trying to overpower the continent and gain control. They wanted to overtake a socialist Russia.

I doubt they'd try to half arse take over a country while they had their plate full. But it's all speculation.

The Zimmermann telegram didn't get us involved in WWI but it helped sway public opinion.

(Legit question bc I could have given it away with misinformed details).

It probably wasn't hard to intercept transatlantic communications back then. telegrams were literally done via few cables in the Atlantic between north America and Europe.

Us not getting involved wasn't a direct result from the general public not wanting to?

Not doubting the possibilities. But what did Germany benefit from Mexico gaining 3 bordering states?

It was certainly part of it, but we were getting involved anyway after.

But it's authenticity can't be denied, they were confirmed by Zimmermann himself.

It's crazy how imperialistic the world still was just 100 years ago. Mexico was still butthurt over the Mexican American War and Germany wanted to help them get back the lost Mexican Cession.

Despite my Spanish decent (fraction) is anyone else worried about Mexico being funded and doing that shite again? History in tending to repeat itself and whatnot. I mean, they've already infested the country...

Because he wanted to take the politically advantageous position, which ever way the wind blew, which was eventually to go to war

He ran on keeping us out of war to get reelected, so we stayed out for a while and then got us into a war because it was politically advantageous for him to do so

Because he was a slimy frick
