A Denham Springs police officer was hospitalized after a motorcycle wreck Monday evening.
Officer James E. Foster Jr. was not conscious or breathing when paramedics arrived at the scene, though he was conscious and breathing by the time he was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, said Denham Springs police Detective Glenn Lemoine.
Foster, was in critical condition and undergoing surgery Monday evening, Lemoine said, adding that he was asking for people to pray for the officer.
“He’s in bad shape,” Lemoine said.
Foster was responding to a wreck on Interstate 12 eastbound when he crashed about 5:30 p.m. He was riding a 2012 Harley Davidson south on O’Neal Lane in Baton Rouge when a northbound Honda Accord driven by Janet B. Guedry, 78, turned left in front of him at East Riverdale Avenue, said Trooper First Class Jared Sandifer, a State Police spokesman.
Sandifer said the 39-year-old officer ran into the side of the Accord and was thrown about 80 feet and landed in the road, breaking several bones, the detective said.
Foster and the two cruisers he was riding with had all activated their lights and sirens, Lemoine said. Foster was also wearing his helmet, Sandifer said.
Guedry, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured, Sandifer added. Police do not suspect that either driver was intoxicated, and have cited Guedry for failure to yield, but the investigation continues, Sandifer said. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.
“Please keep the entire DSPD ‘family,’ and officers gathered from other municipalities, in your thoughts as they wait with the family at the hospital,” Denham Springs City Councilwoman Annie Fugler said in an email
Searched, SIAP.

78?
Is their a law requiring old assed drivers to re-take driving tests every year?
If not, there should be.

It's just awful news, I feel for his family, I hope he pulls through
One other thing I don't understand. How could somebody miss all of those flashing lights

I guess I could see someone not seeing a motorcycle. If he was with two actual police cruisers, I have no idea how far up her arse that woman had her head. Today's police cruisers are blinding with all of their lights, two of those and a motorcycle, all with sirens blaring shouldn't be able to be missed. What the frick.
I hope the guy pulls through. That's fricking terrible. Time to make old fricks retake the driving test every year.

Statistically speaking elderly drivers are safer than teens

Also, if the cop was going through a red light, he is still responsible to make sure its safe to cross, its taught like day 1 in the academy that even if you're running code you can't just blow through a red light/stop sign and assume people will stop. You are still legally obligated to make sure its safe to cross.

And this is why senior citizens either:
A) shouldn't be allowed to drive
B) should have to retake the drivers exam every year.

Damn. Sad to hear.
I always fear for those motorcycle cops when I see them driving so fast.

Why was a Denham Springs officer responding to a Baton Rouge wreck?

My guess is that he was on Oneal to get back on the interstate to head eastbound to the wreck

If you look at where the impact is on the car it shows that he was already In the intersection when she turned.

This is my grandmother and she's has all of her wits at 78, truly unfortunate.
Prayer's for him and his family.

What was a Denham police officer doing in Baton Rouge while on duty in the first place?

Theory is: they patrol down to Oneal, then turn around and come back the opposite way

quote:DSPD Motorpatrol doesn't patrol the interstate. Most likely they entered BR from Florida BLVD, headed south on Oneal and were going to come up the interstate to respond to the accident since it was in the eastbound lane.
