re: Democrats' $50,000 student loan forgiveness plan

So, if they are going to forgive all student loans, is college going to be free from now on? Kinda ridiculous to have to go thru the process of getting a student loan just to have it forgiven, right?

student loan forgiveness
frick THAT! Pay your debts! I paid for my college, so can I just get my car loan paid now?

Is there a reason they can't just repeal the fact that student loans aren't subject to bankruptcy?
That alone would help both college costs and the student loan crisis.

Not as big as the people who didn't go to college because they didn't want to take out the loans. Now they are getting nothing and getting left further behind.
I can't fathom that there are people out there that think you need a loan to go to college. Tuition and books aren't that damn expensive.

A far more reasonable solution IMO.
And give some instructions for filing.
They won't do this because it'll make it harder to get student loans going forward for people that clearly aren't worthy of the risk.

This is so fricking stupid. Holy shite.
I'm not saying everyone should have federally backed student loans for their French Literature degree after barely passing high school, but college tuition is outrageous and books cost an arm and a leg.
Because it is all federally backed and they hand them out to anyone, the colleges have exponentially increased all costs associated with attending...because they can.

The irony of Elizabeth Warren leading the way on this is lost on most people.

Since the Boomers in here want to bitch and complain about it not being fair, let's go back and retroactively increase the cost of your education by factors of 10 then we can talk about fairness. I'm graduating this semester with about 30k in student loans and will happily take having it all wiped away immediately

They also don't want to do it because they are scared of standing up to the people who own that debt.

I think Pocahontas is a plague on this country, but expound on this, I think I'm missing it. Because she's so rich?

This kind of policy will cost you far more than $30k in the long run.
I have student loan debt and this doesn't make sense, it is a very expensive measure that does nothing to fix the actual underlying problems.

One of two things needs to happen. The government needs to completely get out of student loans (stop backing them), so that the risk is on the private entity that provides the loan. This would limit the amount of loans given out, and limit the amount that would be loaned, but I don't think that this would ever be agreed to.
Or, the government needs to provide the loans, interest free, and put a cap on how much can be loaned to a single individual, while still not being dischargeable. This would open loans to more people, but would limit the outrageous increases in tuition due to the limit on loans that can be taken out. I think this would be a solution that many would agree to, as it's a compromise that appears to be "fair".

I've got about that much for my masters and I 100% empathize with your position.
But in the long run, this would be disastrous for our country. A country I want to leave for my children.
It is tough to think about that when the short-term benefit is so great, but that is what we have to do as responsible Americans. Democrats can't think past next Wednesday when it comes to shite like this.

I think the gov't should also excerpt some control on how universities compensate administrators, how many administrators they have, etc. to control costs.
Basically, if a university wants federal student aid to be readily offered at their university, then the need to show that they are making efforts to keep tuition down and combat these unnecessary administrative costs which are helping drive rising tuition.

My point was that there are some instances where you can work while in school and actually pay for school. That's it. I didn't say that everyone can do that, I never implied that. I just stated that you can't also say with 100% certainty that working while is school is practically useless, which was basically what the person I was responding to said.
No, you compared your experience of working while going for your grad degree and broadly applied it to everyone, which includes undergrad degrees. You can work, but you admitted that shite jobs won’t pay for degrees. What do you think someone without a degree can get?
Also, no one cares about your plan. You can’t instantly cap student loans before fixing the cost of tuition first. You’ll leave people in debt without being able to finish degrees, because there is no reason Universities would need to instantly reduce their cost. But especially at 40k now a days. Just look at LSU tuition with living on campus. Over 20k a year. Doesn’t include food, books, $200 online subscription just to be able to submit homework for your class. It would just force people into having to get private loans, worsening the situation.

I am a free-market person at my core and I don't like this - but understand why it would help.
But as we've discussed, the real solution is the government to completely leave it the frick alone and stop backing student loans. That would fix everything. It would all work itself out.
I can't believe how stupid and/or corrupt people in Washington are on both sides of the aisle. It's disgusting.

Government could be a bit stricter with the universities who accept these loans as well in terms of tuition increases and how money is spent. Universities are supposed to be schools, but you'd think they're like 40% leisure resorts with some of the shite they build.
