Most of them are. I live near an airport, and those were always the loudest SOBs on ascent. Things got a lot quieter around the house when American retired them. The 717 is a lot less loud.

I still remember the year all the American -80/88s got grounded on a Thursday?, and my happy arse was able to fly home from EWR to ATL on a Delta 88.

iirc, the JT8D-200 was one of he first engines to comply with Stage III noise requirements, it was one of the quietest engines out there when it first came out
