My wife and I both have been hit in recent months. Thankfully Capital One notified us as someone attempted to spend money and we were able to block it.

I hear you but whether 500 dollars or 10 grand the theft operation is underway. I am lucky this was a secondary account. Nowadays why would anyone keep a large sum of money in a checking account, there is no interest to be made.
The complete theft operation just shocked me and I was not aware they started making fake cards with your acct. number. It is shocking.

I keep a max of $300 on my debit card for everyday small purchases, but the bulk goes into an investment account so I can manage my funds. I just move money over to it using an app as needed.
BTW - I've been hit three times on my debit card and someone also hit my Hilton account and converted almost 800 thousand points into $25 VISA debit/gift cards and had them delivered to Poland. By the time I figured it out it was too late for VISA to cancel the cards, but Hilton put the points back on my account.

Skimmers will always have to have a covert camera to capture your PIN. The simple act of covering or shielding the key pad when you enter your PIN will thwart this.
Skimmers can be rudimentary - an overlay of a skimmer over the card slot, or very sophisticated, a deep insert into the ATM machine. But the important thing to remember is that a skimmer will need a covert camera.
Shimmers, on the other hand, are inserted into the ATM machine and can record your PIN without the need of a camera.
Bottom line, cover the key pad whenever you enter your PIN and this will stop 95% of the technology used to create cloned cards.

Happened to me a couple of months ago. Some NBR hoodrat stole my #. It was easy enough to prove because the idiot paid her Entergy bill with it.
I'm strictly credit card now.

One of my patients said it happened twice to him after using his card at the Racetrack in Dutchtown. The guys that got caught later with all the equipment were actually from Miami.

Stopped for gas on the way to work. By lunch time they had transferred $18k from our savings account to checking and made 15 $500 purchases.

If someone has fraud insurance from one of the credit monitoring places; do they cover this on top off the bank giving you your money back?

exactly. we ended up closing all of our accounts and opening new accounts. Was a pain in the arse because we had that checking account for over 30 years and had a lot of shite being auto paid out of it.

I had just gotten the new debit card with the chip. We see how that helped.
It is my understanding the chip is better protection for retailers, not necessarily the consumer. Basically, if you're not accepting the chip and a card is used fraudulently, the retailer has more liability. Accepting the chip helps prevent fraud occurring at your location.
Obviously there is a benefit for the consumer as locations with the chip are increasing, but until all locations use it, it isn't invincible.

I have a debit no chip and credit card with chip
My debit card has never been hacked my credit card has been hacked 3 times in the past year.
I've been trying to figure out how where my security hole is but as of now haven't found it.

Everything I've read says never select "debit" when you pay outside at gas stations. This is a good article explaining why.
