Yeah I didn't think they had access to the savings acct. Just the debit number stolen and maybe the checking acct number if they hacked your acct. online.

(I had this happen. Somehow online banking was hacked.) I had to get an entirely different account. They usually ping the acct. for some odd low number then go to town. But this is different than debit card number theft.

How did they do this?

good question. I know i can withdraw money from savings with my debit card.

But, apparently having the card and pin was enough to get the password changed on the bank website.

Use credit everywhere and pay off your entire balance at the end of the month. I've got a Citi card that gives me 2% back- 1% when I spend and 1% when I pay. No rotating categories.

This all day every day, why everyone does not use a cash back card is beyond my limited comprehension.

I don't use my debit card anywhere but the ATM at my bank (Chase). If they allowed a scammer device to be installed on their ATM on their property, I'd raise holy hell.

My debit card lives in my safe these days, no legit reason to carry one anymore in my life.

My debit card has never been hacked my credit card has been hacked 3 times in the past year.

I've been trying to figure out how where my security hole is but as of now haven't found it.
Yeah, they can hack credit cards as well. The debit card I was robbed with had a chip. I would like to know what good a chip does?

You are correct that people need to be using credit cards instead of debit cards if they have discipline, but travel reward cards are where it's at for the most bang for your buck.
I use credit cards for every charge possible including autopayments for the gym, etc.

I've earned several thousand dollars in free flights and hotels in the last five years. Just this year I stayed at a Hilton resort where the stay would have cost $1600, but used points for it all.

Never use debit at a gas pump. Always use credit. Even if you are using your debit card, press the credit option and you do not have to put in your pin. Problem solved.

Wiggle the slot, skimmers will often feel slightly loose.

A far bigger concern should be blindly giving your card to a waitstaff member, who works for $2.10 an hour and has a camera phone. The vast majority of these people are wonderful, honest people, but is this practice totally safe. Europeans view us as fools for not demanding portable card readers.

Utilization is not bad. The biggest thing is balance vs limit.

That is the utilization number the companies use.

You definitely want utilization under 50%, and ideally under 20%. I also use a cash back card (and some folks swear by rewards cards) and pay off the balance - generally every time I get paid, the card gets paid. I highly recommend using a budget software, YNAB, Every Dollar, or equivalent, so that you are not just wildly using the card and "financing" your budget.

If you operate this way, you are using the card in a classic "charge" card style, which is not anathema to wealth, instead of a revolving "credit" card style which is.

Probably as big a reason for the chips as the gas pump/ATM skimmers. Also, most brand name gas stations and all ATMs have cameras - so it's easier to catch/defeat those. A restaurant case takes a lot longer to sort out who did what with a card because of the delay in reporting, etc.

When at a gas station or ATM, turn on the Bluetooth on your phone and scan for devices. If you see a device with a long string of random numbers, it's probably a skimmer in the area.

The biggest thing is before you put your card in any machine is to tug on it. Pull on the part of the ATM or gas pump where your card goes. 9 times out of 10 the skimmer is just a slide on piece of plastic with electronics imbedded. They pull right off so that the thief can get them on the machine and off quickly without being detected or raising suspicion. A little tug and shake will tell you a lot.

Secondly, look at the face of the machine to see if there are any marks, usually made with a sharpie. Criminals mark machines they have had success at in the past.
