It's easier to deal with a credit card company than a bank. There is no denying that.

I never denied that. I just said that having the right bank makes it much easier. A good fraud department will catch charges immediately and take action.

Is that a French scam?

I think it's French for braised Pig colon served on a bed of rapacious three leaved Comtat Venaissin ivy, grown on the finest oaks, tenderly bathed in a Béchamel sauce. I could be wrong, though.

Agreed, but they don't put the money back immediately, which could be a problem for some.

Happened to me last week. Fortunately I am only out $170 and caught it in time. Hope the bastards enjoy their Target purchases and car wash.

Lesson learned. Credit only from now on.

The thieves made a purchase for $500, $400, and then five seperate $100 ATM withdrawals. I've learned my lesson, credit card from here on out. It's such a pain in the arse on top of the stress of getting ripped off. My bank guaranteed me every penny back but it will take a few days at least to get the funds back. This must be happening a lot because the banker basically told me not to use their debit card anymore, use their credit card.

As already mentioned, use a cc as much as possible. Your cash isn't affected, you may get points/incentives and the chargeback rights are different.

Question, how do they make ATM withdrawals without the actual card?

Making duplicate cards isn't difficult, this is why the industry is moving to chipped cards. Theory is the chip can't be duplicated. On non-chipped cards the PIN is imbedded in the magnetic strip.

Chip and PIN is a better combination but the US is slow to adopt.

Or you could just make sure that what you're putting your card into doesn't have a skimmer on it. Little secret, the card slot should be flush with the machine.

Correct!

I bank at Chase and I went to use my debit card and the card would not work. So I used my credit card for the purchase. A few minutes later I got an alert from Chase that my debit card was overdrawn. I went to a Chase branch and they told me that they shut down the card when someone tried to use it somewhere in BFE Mexico.

When I use my debit card and especially for gas, I always choose credit. Never punch in your pin

My wife's debit card has been hit about 3 times in the last 2yrs. She forgets to use it as a credit card instead of debit.
